Swapping X61 System board with X61s

I was looking for some quick advice - I have an X61s that is in great consmetic condition and I bought a battered X61 2.4Ghz from ebay. The X61 works well but has alot of scratches, broken plastic etc. I was wondering if its possible to swap out the system board from my X61s with the system board of...

Re: Help me salvage the last 'good' thinkpad

Installed a 64GB Crucial M4. Battery life is about 20minutes more I used to get 3.30 hours now I get 3.50-3.55 (BatteryBar Pro) The performance has improved, videos play smooth, Netflix, YouTube HD etc (not sure if this was a result of the SSD or the BIOS upgrade - I was running a really old version...

Re: Help me salvage the last 'good' thinkpad

If I was you, I would look around for solutions for the heating problem. I have an X61t and have never faced any problems with heat (i use it less since I find it heavy) My x61s on the other hand drove me nuts before folks here helped me fix the problem by swapping out the wireless card. Another thi...

Re: Help me salvage the last 'good' thinkpad

Hi milstein, Everyone will have their own opinion and here's mine. I would not recomend the X220 only becase of its build quality. And its not just me, if you google around you'll find alot of people posting issues they have had - battery loose, uneven gaps between bezel and the screen, card slot se...

Re: Help me salvage the last 'good' thinkpad

Thanks Fixed_Rider! Placing my order for the crucial right now. Just curious - did you downgrade to 2GB of RAM intentiaonally or was 4GB not supported after your SSD install? I read on another forum where someone mentioned that their new SSD worked with only 2GB of ram, they had to get rid of the se...

Re: Help me salvage the last 'good' thinkpad

Thanks for the advice Tasurinchi :) Alot of folks have posted great improvements after the SSD upgrade (especially with respect to boot times) Do you think the SSD upgrade will also help with my problem of sluggish performance while streaming high-quality videos on the X61s? Or is that more a graphi...

Re: Help me salvage the last 'good' thinkpad

Based on what alot of SSD reviews, the Crucial M4 works great with lapotps. Does anyone know if it will it work on the X61s - anyone with experiences to share? http://www.amazon.com/Crucial%C2%A064-2-5-Inch-Solid-State-CT064M4SSD2/dp/B004W2JKWG/ref=sr_1_6?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1353940650&sr=1-6&...

Re: Help me salvage the last 'good' thinkpad

Thanks all for the advice! Based on what most of you have said, the first upgrade I'm going to make is the hard drive. I have a couple of questions: - apart from a 2.5 internal laptop SSD drive is there any other spec I should check for before buying? I see quite a few floatig around on ebay - http:...

Help me salvage the last 'good' thinkpad

I recently purchased an X220 and I bought an X201 before that. Previously owned the x40, x60, x61, x61t, x61s I truly believe that after the x6.. series the thinkpad quality has gone downhill and I will never buy a thinkpad again. The only functional thinkpad I have today is the x61s and I wanted to...

Re: removing the X61s wireless cards *PICS*

You were right,i just had to keep going :-) Maybe my bit is not sharp enough so it took 10 minutes to get to the donut shape. 1 screw is off - 3 more to go. Maybe later this evening. Thanks so much for all the help advice. I will soon report is swapping the wifi card helped with thr heat problem . T...

Re: removing the X61s wireless cards *PICS*

I was getting really impatient to wait for the weekend so I decided to go with plan B - i.e rip out the cards  I started with the Sierra card and surprisingly found that the card/PCB itself is really delicate and that’s the reason why ScottyBoy was able to rip it out. In my case I had some suc...

Re: removing the X61s wireless cards *PICS*

So I tried to give this a shot last night but realized that I do not have a small enough bit. So (and I know this sounds really stupid) I used a really sharp screw that I had in place of a bit. The screw was sturdy and drilled gently only to see a really tiny hole in the screw. I looked at the other...

Re: removing the X61s wireless cards *PICS*

Wow - it's great to hear everyone’s story. Thanks so much for posting. Looks like I'm going into surgery tonight. I'll try drilling first - if that fails I'll try a pair of pincers. It would be a shame to destroy two perfectly good wireless modules including the Sierra card :( I've had the X201, X20...

Re: removing the X61s wireless cards

Thanks for your replies! @Tasurinchi - your screws look so clean - jealous :) I have an Atheros installed in the X61s right now and I want to replace it with an Intel 4965AG which I took out from my X61 tablet http://www.amazon.com/Intel-4965AG-Wireless-miniPCI-Express/dp/B002L3P4T6 The X61t gave me...

removing the X61s wireless cards *PICS*

I have an X61s which I love and want to hang on to for as long as I can. I want to remove the WIFI card and the WWAN card since they both generate too much heat at the palm rest. Even with wireless options disabled in the BIOS and the wireless hardware switch on the laptop turned off it still genera...

X61 tablet Fan into X61s

I have an X61s who's fan is really noisy and I have a spare (for parts) X61 tablet. I was wondering if I could swap the tablet's fan (that worked really well while the laptop was alive) into the X61s (just the fan - not the heat sink) Any feedback or suggestions would be great! Thanks in advance. Mo...
