Re: RetroThinkPad survey #2 of 4 ** the REAL one **

Or something could happen along the lines of the Dell lineup from at least the C400 (which competed against the X22) all the way to the E4310. Their equivalents to the X-series (anything Latitude where the first digit was 4) got 6-row keyboards to maintain trackpad room presumably, whereas their T/W...

Re: Survey 3 of 4 is up + PLEASE VOTE FOR this forum Aspect Ratio

Interestingly, the bluetooth keyboard's TrackPoint uses a different calibration algorithm - it calibrates on power-on, and that's it, any drift that happens is going to happen until it's shut off and back on. And, unlike the ThinkPad laptops, the TrackPoint controller isn't mounted at the stick, the...

It's also worth noting that Apple's lineup is much, much smaller, forcing people into the models that Apple wants to sell. Apple's lineup, today, for tablets and laptops, in increasing size: iPad mini 3 iPad Air 2 MacBook Air (11-inch, Early 2015) MacBook (Early 2015) MacBook Air (13-inch, Early 201...

Re: RetroThinkPad survey #4 of 4 *** FINAL SURVEY **

The real issue IMO is that as a 1 off sop to the old time TP design ethos, the rest of the Thinkpad line in the future will mean less user changeable/upgradeable parts less options and nothing but ULV processors. Thinkpads were work machines not fashion accessories. If Lenovo are saying they cant m...

Re: Survey 3 of ?? is up + PLEASE VOTE FOR this forum Aspect Ratio

I will say that one problem with the digital standards is the length limits they have, after which they stop working... whereas VGA keeps working badly (horrible ghosting and such). That may be why it's dominant with projectors still, actually.

Re: Survey 3 of ?? is up + PLEASE VOTE FOR this forum Aspect Ratio

Keep in mind that Apple's laptops haven't had VGA ports since 2002, and people have just used adapters and been fine.

Really, projectors are actually holding back the adoption of digital video standards and making things worse for when you do have a monitor you want to plug in.

Re: Survey 3 of ?? is up + PLEASE VOTE FOR this forum Aspect Ratio

The P2314Hs that my client orders come with power, USB (for the hub), VGA, and DisplayPort cables. They've got a DVI port on them, but no cable. As far as USB-C Alternate Modes, that really is the way to go in the future. It was specifically intended to run DisplayPort over the connector, I believe ...

Re: Survey 3 of ?? is up + PLEASE VOTE FOR this forum Aspect Ratio

DisplayPort is definitely around - things that are oriented towards professional applications have it basically guaranteed, partially because it has higher resolution support than HDMI and DVI due to running faster. (DisplayPort 1.3 supports 25.92 Gbps (enough for 5120x2880 @ 60 Hz), contrast with H...

Re: Survey 3 of ?? is up + PLEASE VOTE FOR this forum Aspect Ratio

Hah, according to the poll in this thread I am literally the only person who prefers 16:9 :o #stopkony I'm actually OK with really wide (even, in cases like the VAIO P, wider than 16:9) aspect ratios on small machines (under 12" or so), to preserve keyboard size. But, that's not appropriate for thi...

And, I should have also made it clear that gaming was the workload that pushed my X61t into true throttling. It's the only workload that I found that did it, due to the sustained CPU and GPU load.

Re: Survey 3 of ?? is up + PLEASE VOTE FOR this forum Aspect Ratio

It was more a case of, I had the X61t, and did occasional light gaming on it when it was the computer I had with me, really - I wouldn't have ever selected an X61t as a gaming rig.

Re: Survey 3 of ?? is up + PLEASE VOTE FOR this forum Aspect Ratio

To be fair, I distinctly recall my X61t (and that's with a 17 W CPU) noticeably throttling hard when gaming, and that's well before any Mac imitation happened in the line. And, I remember my X21 hitting thermal shutoff (then again, I recall the person I sold it to saying that the real problem was th...

And, the other thing is, there's rumors of 35 watt configurations of Skylake-H quad cores. A 35 watt CPU is something that Lenovo's sold in a 12-inch chassis - the X60, X61, X200, and X201 all had them.

Re: Survey 3 of ?? is up + PLEASE VOTE FOR this forum Aspect Ratio

The problem with both the survey and this poll is there's often not space to explain the idea of what the user means by an isolated vote on a feature, and the results for each feature are likely looked at in isolation - so, they look at screen size, and then aspect ratio, not screen size and aspect ...

Re: Thinkpadders Rejoice (*LARGE PICS*)

Well, the TouchPad did have software problems, even ignoring the app gap (which was pretty bad, let's be honest) and the fact that you had to install Preware to get a lot of the software. WebOS had some excellent UI decisions, but the OS was incredibly inefficient at actually getting anything done -...

Re: Thinkpadders Rejoice (*LARGE PICS*)

It's also worth noting that Apple commissioned the 4:3 panels for their own production, and then everyone else got to use them. Lenovo would also have to commission a 4:3 panel, and for that, they'd either have to charge a lot, or they'd have to make the machine their volume model - which I suspect ...

Re: Thinkpadders Rejoice (*LARGE PICS*)

I think what ThinkPad560X is asking for is another T50-like project from some place like 51nb.com - basically a new motherboard designed specifically for the T6x chassis that they have, that wouldn't be a Lenovo design.

Re: Thinkpadders Rejoice (*LARGE PICS*)

Let's be fair, I'd count the T61 as the same generation as the T60, and therefore a Lenovo-badged T43 is only one generation back. (There wasn't a T5x generation, after all, due to how the R-series was misnumbered, with R40 being equivalent to T30 (or sorta kinda related to T40/41 with the Pentium M...

Re: Thinkpadders Rejoice (*LARGE PICS*)

I'm sure lenovo can use the IBM logo again. The IBM logo is Used under licence on 2006-2007 ThinkPads. Often, those agreements are time limited, and in this case, it was a 5 year agreement - so, after December 2009, they couldn't use the IBM logo (but they went away from it much sooner than they ha...

It's actually decently useful on Windows if you know the shortcuts, it's extremely useful on a properly-configured *nix, nearly critical (with some remapping to make it make more sense) if you're Hackintoshing, and if you don't like it, you can remap it to something else. Personally, I found the lac...

Re: RetroThinkPad survey #2 of ?? ** the REAL one **

I chose 13.3" and 16:10 because, with a sufficiently small bezel, that gives room for a webcam and ThinkLights above, and indicator LEDs below, while maintaining an A4 form factor.

Re: Thinkpadders Rejoice (*LARGE PICS*)

At least the “Classic” ThinkPad keyboard kept them in the same arrangement, though they were shrunken and separated from the arrow keys. And they were still lined up so the same 3 fingers still can press the same keys. This made sense in the original ThinkPads when laptops were constrained in width...
