Re: SSD Question for a W530

OK, I've heard from other threads that it's best to do a fresh install when putting in a new SSD instead of using imaging programs such as Acronis. Is this still the general consensus? Yes, because Windows 7/8 will automatically optimize for SSDs when you clean install, and you get a fresh start wi...

Re: Z61t, getting the most power out of it....

Why don't you trust SSDs? They are superior to HDDs in speed, reliability, power consumption, almost everything. Even prices for good SSDs have come quite down. Also, the issue of wear on the SSD flash cells and performance degradation is not a problem anymore. TRIM and much better firmware has made...

Re: Latest OS For T21

Another option would be puppy linux, specifically, wary puppy 5.5. It includes all the drivers for older hardware, has good apps, excellent speed, and is easy to use. Also, stay away from heavy linux distros like Ubuntu and linux mint. Even their slim downed relatives like Xubuntu, Lubuntu, are stil...

Re: T61 LCD problems after cleaning - screen dead?

As a side note, don't use windex on lcd screens. It will yellow the screen overtime and isn't very gentle anyway. This method works much better: 1. Get a clean, quality microfiber cloth (slightly smaller than a standard hand towel). 2. Wet one side moderately with water. The towel needs to be slight...

Re: t61 screens

Yea, anything higher than SXGA+ in 14.1 can be difficult to read unless you have very good eyesight. Personally, after upgrading to SXGA+ from XGA in my T61, I sometimes prefer XGA. Its very easy on the eyes, especially when coding long hours, and most websites still fit perfectly in width. Scrollin...

Re: Which windows on my X220?

Windows 8.1 does have an advantage in regards to speed and security, but its metro interface and awkward placement of tools/programs can make it annoying. If you are used to xp or 7, stick with Windows 7.

Re: how common are the thinkpad in your country?

Thinkpads are somewhat common at my campus. Maybe about 15% of students have a thinkpad, of which 66% are mostly T430/T530 and T440/T540 models. The other 34% are mostly Edge. I have seen less than 8 people on the entire campus who have older models, though. 2 4:3 T61s, 1 X300, 1 W500, 2 X61, 1 x201...

Re: Trackpoint and touchpad not working

What do you mean resetting the bios, can you elaborate. the track point and touch pad are enabled. When you enter the bios by pressing the F1 key (iirc), there should be an option that says "restore defaults" or to some factory setting. I doubt it will make any difference, but you never know. If bo...

Re: Swap T60 lid into T60 Compatibility

Thanks for all the replies. I have ordered a new lid + hinges, as well as a used T60 lcd assembly for using the wifi antennas, lcd cable, misc. stuff, and a scew kit.

I am using my T23 (suprisingly fast with crunchbang linux) right now as a backup until all the parts arrive :) .

Thanks,
Brian

Re: Swap T60 lid into T60 Compatibility

Thanks for the response. Why would I still need T61 hinges? I have swapped the entire lid assembly from my mom's T60 into my T61 (includes T60 hinges), just to see if it worked, and it worked perfectly. I am just wondering if there are any specific parts that are interchangeable or I need (see above...

Re: Trackpoint and touchpad not working

Try restoring the bios back to defaults and make sure that the touchpad and trackpoint options are enabled there. Also, can you try burning a linux distro (ex. puppy linux) to a usb drive and try booting from that? If your trackpoint and touchpad still do not work, then your keyboard might be bad.

Swap T60 lid into T60 Compatibility

Hello all, I would like to swap a T60 lid assembly into my T61 and have a few questions. 1. Can the inverter in the T61 be used in a T60 lid? 2. Are LCD cables (and that little black roller where the cable exits the lid) interchangeable? 3. What kind of 14.1 hinges should I get (make, model)? 4. Wil...

Re: Zender's BIOS Advantages?

No T61s are still under lenovo's warranty. The last T61s were made in late 2008, and even with the 5 year warranty would have expired by late 2013.

Re: Will T61 ultrabay fit the Edge E540

Swapping the hdd and ssd between the ultrabay and main caddy will not void the warranty since they are CRU (consumer replaceable units).

Re: HD Rails

I have a W530 with Lenovo's HDD caddy. Rubber rails weren't required, but they did help fill the side gaps between the HDD and the caddy, as well offer a better fit (not sure about the newer thinkpads). I would recommend getting the rails, as they also help absorb shock.

Re: Which model is right for me?

Ah, I just realized that your original post already said that you preferred new. Sorry about that. In this case, I would go for the t440. The E440 and L440 are a step down in quality (the E440 more so) and may be disappointing. The T series offers more options as well.

Hope this helps,
Brian

Re: Which model is right for me?

Hi ssarmazi, What is your budget and do you require the laptop to be new? I personally would recommend the t420 over the other options for the following reasons: - More durable (especially the lid) and includes lid latches - Classic keyboard - Dedicated trackpoint buttons - Less expensive - Easier m...
