Re: Would you buy a T43 today?

Most of the heat from the GPU is trapped because IBM, for whatever reason, decided to use a thermal pad. For me, removing the pad, applying thermal past directly to the gpu, and adding a shim on top of the heatsink (you could reuse a thin thermal pad or copper penny), brought overall temps signific...

Re: Would you buy a T43 today?

The problem for that unofficial thing is unlike T43 Sonoma Pentium Ms, Pentium III 1.2ghz has a higher TDP than the stock 1ghz model and I found it heats up 10 celcius degrees more in full load. Still it doesn't go any hotter than 80 degrees which is decent. You could put a heatsink from A31p - pre...

Re: Would you buy a T43 today?

You could always put OS/2 Warp on it; the T43 runs it quite well. OS/2 will go on my A31p first... I've read your experiences regarding the combination in question and was quite impressed. Having said that, I really don't know when I'll have time to spare for such an undertaking... Does OS/2 play w...

Re: Would you buy a T43 today?

Having said, these machines definitely have some life left in them, especially in a *nix environment. I'm still debating what to throw on my T43pSF apart from W7...there are several distros that I like quite a bit, latest Debian-based-Mint being one of them... You could always put OS/2 Warp on it; ...

Re: T601f instant shutdown

When I installed a T61 battery in my T60, it would cause the T60 to shut down after finishing loading windows. Also, a weird battery I got from George will cut the power to the laptop after running for 20 minutes, and then needs to be reseated for the T61 mobo to power back on. SERVICEABLE USED PART...

Re: WinXP activation fails & some OS/2 findings

After playing a bit with OS/2 Warp during few previous days, I have decided to switch to Windows XP recently. Few things I don't like on OS/2 Warp: - Very slow boot - the T43 boots OS/2 very slowly, splash screen is on for few minutes until it reaches desktop - Unstable - putting a new driver cause...

Re: T460 (Topseller) [W7 preload via W10 downgrade rights]: Best way to have 10 as OS?

Still, I'd like the same situation as a model shipped with 10 (all correct drivers and 10-specific apps) before I go clean install or back to 7. Both generic M$ ISO and OEM version from Lenovo discs? If your ThinkPad is under warranty, phone Lenovo support and ask for the appropriate recovery media...

Re: T41 screen broken - R51 screen usable?

No way shall I attempt to work out the CMOS battery. The prices on eBay for the Varta CR2032 make those thoughts go away quickly. One of my friends refers to varta as "farta", since their NiCad (and others) often tend to leave catastrophic messes in 486es, amigas, apples, etc. I'd go with Panasonic...

Yes I run server 2012 r2. THe thing is that Lenovo has put only one driver for windows 8.1 and it is the synaptic one. There is a regular Ultranav driver and I can confirm as I've used it: http://support.lenovo.com/ca/en/downloads/ds031964 Unfortunately Lenovo lost their mind and did not catalogue ...

There is one way... although it would be expensive.

Yamaha did release some PCMCIA sound modules / so that at least would give you Adlib support. However, the only one that I saw on ebay was for $100, and someone has since purchased it.

Re: Max HDD size / Hot swap SATA in IBM System x3550 server

That system x definitely should support 2 TB (I have *IntelliStations* that are older which do). The problem is most likely the rebadged ServeRAID controller. If you want to update all of the firmware and BIOS, you'll want to use UpdateXpress or BoMC (Bootable Media Creator). Often IBM lists firmwar...

May as well clean the whole membrane while you're at it, actually.

What version of Windows are you running, 8.1? I'm also going to assume it's an X series ThinkPad. The touchpad must be connected in order for your to install the *ultranav* driver. If only the trackpoint is connected, the *trackpoint* driver must be installed. The driver has two portions, the rich l...

The 701C for me - it exemplifies the companies quality and innovation, something IBM didn't get enough credit for, imo. All SK-8845s use the same chip (hidden under a glop top) and synaptics driver package.

ArcaNoae may support TRIM (https://www.arcanoae.com/blue-lion/) when it's done. OS/2 definitely does not (it can't even renew an IP address without restarting the OS), and I don't think ecomstation ever implemented the support. Windows 10 gives you better experiences (things like Cortana, start menu and action center) and better animations but in terms of speed it is the same. One area where A31p still outshines any newer ThinkPad is the sound quality. I can’t wrap my head around the fact that the designers couldn’t keep up with this standard. T43p and Z61m both sound like tin cans when placed next to an A31p, and their newer cousins fare even worse. A lot worse. I wante...
