Re: w510's still manufactured?

Ok, looks like a new w510 isn't gonna happen. So...if I were to clone the drive in my current w510... 1. Is there another Lenovo model that would be minimally troublesome to get the cloned drive to work in... 2. if I do get another system for a backup, install the cloned drive and run into driver p...

Re: That was a disaster

Lenovo has since fixed the TrackPoint driver to scroll in the 'Metro' interfaces. Yeah, but they hid the driver really well. I'll save you several hours of searching and just tell you that version 18.1.27.30 is the only one that fully works (although some registry adjustments need to be made to get...

Re: Keeping my nine year old alive, and SSD recommendation

W7 is the latest Windows OS a T60 can handle properly. Otherwise you run into driver problems, namely no gpu support for the old ATI cards. Technically Vista was the last OS to support the T60 natively. Windows 7 and 10 just happen to still be compatible with Vista drivers. I actually got Windows 1...

You see the problem is nothing lasts forever* - even with quality products. For those two machines it is really the capacitors on the power board failed thus supplying insufficient voltage/current to the machine itself so I become afraid of leaving it on constantly So you mean that by NOT putting i...

OSfree is pretty much a dead end until more developer support and interest happens.

BlueLion is definitely going to be pretty nice to have when it's released. Especially with how HORRIBLE Windows 10 is.

Re: A31p motherboard problems

Do you mean that A31p overclocks by itself or it was just a motherboard error?? I was just making a joke about the self-overclocking :0) (NetBurst was a very inefficient architecture) One unique thing about Pentium 4s though... is that they're highly tolerant to high temperatures. Did you try check...

Re: A31p stuff for shipping cost only

Then why don't I get the same thing on Pentium 4 HT Prescott 650 in Windows 10? Instead it's speed is 2.7-3.4ghz and performs slower than Pentium M 780 (I know this is because of efficiency problems) You'd need liquid nitrogen to cool a standard Pentium 4 overclocked to 5.7 Ghz. One that operates a...

And if you really want it to be confidential disconnect the internet or just use Windows 2000 That's not going to be a feasible solution for most people which need: modern application support + internet + an OS that isn't so chatty constantly sending data; and confidentiality is just one of the man...

Re: A31p stuff for shipping cost only

At least we have a CPU inside. Pentium 4 1.8 which Windows 7 think it is 5.7ghz for some reason... Update: now W7 thinks it is 5.9ghz lol This is due to the incredible NetBurst(TM) technology, it incrementally self-overclocks itself for more peformance. After all, the more NETBURST Gigahertz you ha...

FYI the last version of Windows without bloat or unreliability is Windows 2000. It is nice and snappy from PII ThinkPad 600 to PM Dothan ThinkPad T43. And as for data collection, I don't care at all but what I do care is it eats up my CPU power. I have disabled Windows Update service on almost all ...

There are no reliable operating systems except DOS, which is 100% reliable because it's so primitive. Haha I have a dedicated computer for DOS because there's still a lot of DOS games that I play. Since I go through hordes of 'soft rim' caps / I can confirm they expand naturally over time with use. They also slowly become harder as the rubber ingests finger oils though. Re: The worst has happened: MS removing GroupPolicy options for Win10pro

My biggest problem with Windows 10 is the extensive HDD usage. My T500 running 7 right now blinks the HDD light maybe every 5-10 seconds? On Win10 it's always a steady flickering with 5 minutes of pegged HDD usage after every power cycle: startup, wake from sleep, reboot. I hate this so much. That ...

Re: The worst has happened: MS removing GroupPolicy options for Win10pro

If you run the newest versions of Windows 10, you do have some flexibility of when to install updates. I have my own Windows 10 machines and clients' Windows 10 machines to update outside the hours of 7am to 7pm. This generally works. Windows 10 now has about 25% market share and Windows 7 is less ...

Did you try specifying the '256' colours option? The game is experiencing palette corruption. Usually this is a problem moreso in vista/7 than it is with XP. 380Z/560Z are nice machines for their time but their use of EDO memory rather than the new PC66 was an unfortunate limitation (only 160MB could be used on the 380Z/560Z while if they went with SDRAM PC66 they could have gone to 288MB instead, with 32MB on-board and a 256MB stick) Hah! Re: 380Z Midi mixing

It looks like Cirrus didn't end up making drivers for W98 SE for this chipset, which is a bit annoying. I suspect this is the cause. I've had CS4237B working with 98SE with full functionality; the reason why a "native" 98SE driver doesn't exist is because Crystal Semiconductor designed the 95 packa...

This would be a problem with Windows 98 itself and not the ThinkPad. Go into sound settings and ensure MIDI playback device is the appropriate one (in this case I believe it would be Crystal FM).

From a technology perspective these middle-aged models like the X220 are obsolete already. They have slower SSDs (non PCIe, non NVMe), older memory (DDR3), no LTE, displays with a limited non-high-res resolution (and often also TN). They also lack modern ports like Thunderbolt or USB Type C, and th...
