T400 comes alive!
Friday the 13 luck this time, in repairing this motherboard I had accidentally severed the VCC+ line to the Texas Instrument battery charger chip. One additional wire jumper later and now I have all green lights, battery is charging happily  Only took a year to fix- LOL but I had other fish...

I am Kratos, king of motherboard repair
Been working on this T400 MB for about a year off and on, as a challenge. Never worked on a ThinkPad before. No power, turned out to be an internal board short at the back edge probably caused by battery corrosives. Couple of 0.5 amp fuses blown. Careful X-acto work and a couple jumper wires and I j...

code 0190 critical low battery error- question
Do all T400s have this "feature"? Lenovo considers it that, however it makes testing a bare motherboard difficult since both a decent battery and functional board charging system seem to be necessary to boot into the setup menu, and both of those are suspect in my case; the board shuts itself off sh...

Re: Minimum hardware required to test motherboard?
I read some other posts and got most of my answers: Minimum required is MB, keyboard, speaker. Should get 1-3-3-1 beep code. VGA out should work. According to Arctic silver, CPU can be damaged in as little as 10 sec without some type of heatsink. Good to know, I'm glad I didn't rush in and damage it...

Minimum hardware required to test motherboard?
I am testing a T400 motherboard which I have (I think) successfully repaired. Can I power it up with only the keyboard attached? Will the external vga connector be live? Do I need the ram installed to post? Also, can the cpu and graphics chips be run without heatsinks for a very short time, maybe 15...

Re: T400 interchange question
By the way I had to eliminate the "dash" from the serial number before Lenovo would accept it.

Re: T400 interchange question
Thanks guys, I was able to follow Ray's advice and look up the buildlist from Lenovo, then look up the screen type in the hardware manual. It is an LED type. Strangely though I was unable to find the FRU number from the motherboard (the one on the 1st label of the three under the ram slots) listed i...

T400 interchange question
My T400 is a 7417-CTO, with a 63Y1189 mainboard. Is it LED or CCFL backlight? Secondly, if I need to replace mainboard do I need to use that specific FRU# ? I thought perhaps the boards are specific for display type...?
Thanks

Check out PuppyLinux; it runs great on older hardware and has a very small file size. I found Mint to be somewhat boated for my needs-

T-400 Boot without LCD?
I'm troubleshooting a dead T-400 and was wondering if a good board will normally boot with only an external monitor connected? Assuming I have some memory installed, keyboard connected and a good source of power. I wanted to eliminate the LCD and cable as a possible source of trouble that's why I'm ...
