Re: Best ThinkPad for all times?
I'd vote for T500 and W500. Three of Thinkpads' greatest aspects are in my opinion 1. Screen size, 2. Keyboard, and 3. Reliability, and the T500 (and W500) excel in these categories. 1. Screen The T500, W500, R500, and SL500 series machines are the last 15.4" 16:10 Thinkpads, so they can be fitted w...

Re: T42p odd pausing and randomizing clock problem
Darn, sounds beyond my capabilities then. Oh well. I used this machine for a bit, it's perfect otherwise, with a nice Flexview display and the GPU hasn't failed yet.
Thanks for your input and help.

T42p odd pausing and randomizing clock problem
Hello, I have a T42p with a pausing clock. The clock as displayed in Windows XP (and I haven't checked yet, but probably the BIOS too) pauses with Standby and Hibernate and often randomizes itself. This is not a terrible issue, I just have to set it every time I want to browse the web. I have determ...

Re: T60p TPFanControl for dummies?
There's a setting in the TPFanControl.ini (which you can edit) which sets the fan speed mode back to Fan128 at around 90 C, which is BIOS. It seems that by default Thinkpads don't like to spin their fans up, so this is actually counterproductive. TPFanControl says: // Fan speed of 64 is extreme and ...

Re: Would you buy a T43 today?
I like Thinkpads and since the T43 is the last T-Series IBM I could probably be persuaded just for collection purposes (preferably a p model). I wouldn't buy one for usability though, because if I wanted to torture a Pentium M in 2015 I'd use my T42p or R50p. Both have 2.0 to 1.8 ghz CPUs, 128mb Fir...

Legacy Red Strips on early Lenovo Thinkpads
Early Lenovo Thinkpads: T/R/X/Z 60/61, T/R 400/500, and I guess SL300/400/500 series too. These thinkpads lack the decorative red and blue button coloring that the IBMs had, and Lenovo brought them back. So I'm a bit confused as to where the funky T400 (left) in this picture got its red strips from....

Re: Should I look for a W520 or buy something newer?
I'm using a machine with 15.4" wsxga+ 1680x1050 resolution right now. 1400x1050 sxga+ was the best resolution that 14" 4:3 thinkpads could get, and there were a lot of 15" T60s with sxga+ too. I'm finding 1050 vertical pixels to work well, coming from a UXGA user, so I imagine FHD (1920x1080) would ...

Re: Should I look for a W520 or buy something newer?
You remind me of me, since I primarily used a T42p until I bought a T500. In my experience anything dual core or higher will fly in comparison to Pentium M. [I'm pretty sure] The Lenovo W520 / T520 / T420 / X220 / X301 laptops are the last Thinkpads with the "classic" 7 row keyboard layout, before L...

Re: W510 performance evaluation ?
A messed up environment, too many running processes esp. if they're memory hogs like, can often degrade your gaming experience. I was crazy and played Need For Speed World MMOG on a T42p. With no browser or antivirus running I could get 25-30 FPS and race competitively. Still crazy tho. 1.8 Ghz Pent...

Maybe try a different posture? I use my index finger on the trackpoint and leave the buttons for my thumb. Other fingers get used just for typing.

I've recently acquired a number of used T500s and a W500. The one I'm currently using and two others have the wobbly screen syndrome, while the rest are super tight. I got a pretty nice one, P8600 with WSXGA+ and Switchable Graphics. Complete with TPFanControl I can play games without turning it int...

Re: What are normal operating temperatures for a T500?
My T500 idles between 55 and 60 C with the fan off and low usage (ie. typing this post). Temperatures go up to 65-75 when I'm running CPU-intensive processes (3D Digital Designer, Movie Maker, Gimp), and I think I've gotten the ATI card to 90, maybe a little over when gaming. All the Thinkpads I've ...

I notice that the keyboard in the video is for older IBM thinkpads, like the T4x and R5x laptops. I'm not sure if there is the Lenovo keyboards are put together differently?

I was unsure of the term too, so I looked online to find what the general consensus things of the meaning. I think Urban Dictionary defined a brick as a totally broken laptop that serves as nothing more than a fancy paparweight, or a brick.

Greetings. Just wanted to update, I pulled the lid off the dead R50p and put it on the other R50p. It booted to my XP environment, ran some old 3D games nicely, then decided to scare me. Ah, so it's not a very simple surgery. Ah well. Thanks RealBlackStuff.
Since I have some extra T500 pieces including a lid I could do the operation if I really wanted to. But going latchless isn't so bad.
Thanks again!

Question: 15" T42p UXGA screen in a 15" T60
Hello, I have a question. Is it possible to take a 1600x1200 screen out of 15" T42p (or R50p) lid and put it in a 15" T60 lid?
According to the thinkwiki both the T42p and T60p use the same 92P6683, 92P6753, and 42T0345 1600x1200 IPS displays.
Thanks.

I've tried the driver hacking method to make other drivers install on T500, but I haven't found a set of drivers that actually enable the feature. I can keep trying though if anyone could point me to a set of drivers that definitely enable Stereo Mix/Wave Mix/What You Hear that are compatible with t...

Re: T500 with Conexant 20561 SmartAudio HD but no Stereo Mix / Wave Out Mix
Thanks for the link! I looked at that thread a bit, all the solutions seem to be for T61/R61 models with Soundmax cards and then laptops more modern than the T500-era with more recent Conexant cards. I saw one person asked a question about the T500's speakers in one of the last pages, but got no ans...

T500 with Conexant 20561 SmartAudio HD but no Stereo Mix / Wave Out Mix
Hi. I recently acquired a beautiful T500, and I love it. I discovered an unfortunate evil however. I have the latest Windows 7 64 bit Conexant 20561 driver for T500s installed, and my T500 is one of the machines affected by the lack of a stereo mix / wave out mix recording capability. This is a feat...

What a difference that made. I did a dot on each of the units and now no overheating- it could get up to 90 degrees C in a beat just through Flash in a browser and shut down. Now it's running at a steady 40C when idle and around 60C with most stuff running. I also gave the fan and internals a blast...
