Re: Best CPU for a T400

Every X9100 you've found for your quoted price range has an S-Spec of SLB48 indicating that the core stepping is C0. That is a different animal. The later core stepping is more efficient and has an S-Spec of SLGE7. Try and find that then look at the price. https://www.ebay.ca/itm/Intel-Core-2-Extre...

Re: T43 Upgrade Project for a Student.

With 2GB, I would only recommend the 32 bit versions of whatever OS you use. Don't forget it's not until T60 with an upgraded Core 2 Duo processor that you HAVE to settle with a 32 bit operating system either way. The WiFi card is Intel and so I've ordered a TP-Link USB wireless adaptor from Amazon...

Re: Best CPU for a T400

Even though I'm only using a 35W CPU, I added thermal pads from the VRMs to the CPU heatsink to dissipate more heat because I'm considering overclocking the T9900. Even though it has a locked multiplier, I should be able to overclock the CPU with Throttlestop, right? My E8135 with an identical stat...

Re: Best CPU for a T400

The T9900. It is E0-stepping and although pricey, is nowhere near what you'd pay for an E0-stepping X9100. I think you meant compared to the X9000... All boards compatible with X9100 will work with a X9000 but not necessarily the other way around. And since without BIOS mods you cannot use a X9100 ...

Re: Best CPU for a T400

I have had both a T9600 and a T9900 (sweet deal, included on a Latitude E6400 that I paid less than the CPU itself is actually worth!), you can maybe get like 10% more performance in real world but you have to pay more than what the T400 itself is worth to get it, and it also runs 10% hotter because...

Re: Ultrabay2000 Zip Drive Click of death

Well you should open it up, pray that the drive heads themselves are not damaged, and try giving it a cotton swab of alcohol to clean them. Also make sure nothing is seizing up the motor. I know those things are rare, I have a bunch of ZIP 100 disks but I gave up finding an Ultrabay 2000 Zip drive a...

Re: Best Older Thinkpad for W10

Hmm well I think I have made an observation for the Intel 945GM chipset. So on T60 (with iGPU), X60, and from my personal experience, Satellite A200, all of which use the 945GM chipset, I install 4GB of RAM and only 3GB is usable. However, on my Dell Inspiron E1505 (a rebadge of 6400 for business ma...

Holy Mazinger :? how did that even happen? IIRC SDRAM slots have two humps, one at the center and another around 1/5 from one end to prevent that. Yes it has 2 humps, but well they are too short that one side clipped in and yeah. Actually on the bright side, the SuperIO is not broken. The only thin...

Re: Anyone have experience with early 2000s Award BIOS?

Oh. In that case, do you have a different CPU to play with? Or maybe remove the CMOS battery to force default settings? So I bought a TL866 programmer and flashed the BIOS to the latest version, it seems to go further in POST but still stuck on the same code. And well now the board is done for beca...

Re: Is this too many laptops in your opinion?

So do I have a T23 whose lid is just fine, and also I used another lid on T22 that literally sat with its LCD and inverter in the drawer for 10 years! Well none of those have antenna built into the lid so for wifi I ended up stripping one antenna off a T4x lid and then route it to the PCMCIA cage. N...

Re: WTB: 15.4" CCFL backlight tubes

Read through with interest, as old, fading backlight seems to be main limiting factor in keeping these old machines alive. You prefer CCFL to LCD? No but I kinda don't have a choice here. I don't wanna do any LED modding to this stuff because it defeats the point of me using such a machine. Well mu...

That derubberised lid looks awesome. I just can't get enough of it. 8) My ThinkPad 600 also has a derubberised lid, though that one is painted over with black spray paint with sadden finish so it looks like the rubberised coating. It also has a new battery that I have scored from local computer sho...

Trying to go online with a T43 and any Windows version is asking for trouble. Well if you want security updates you can install Windows 8.1 Update 1 on T43. that's still perfectly supported. Okay well I think I got a lemon out of that order. It's been like a month since I have installed that CCFL bulb, and it's dying. Initially I get a loud buzzing sound from the inverter so I ended up stuffing some cotton balls to mute it. And then the backlight started becoming really uneven at lower ...

Anyway.. if the driver is not installable (I tried unzipping and installing from the device manager, too), the point is moot! Also if it worked it would likely be very slow. Actually slow isn't even gonna be the biggest problem. The biggest problem with Intel iGPU's is that sometimes they have poor...

Re: Knocked over my drink - Ooops!

Why can't you just use a hair drier on High to dry it out. It'll dry much quicker. Or here in FL, I can just put it on the pool deck for a few mins. But really, getting all the water out of any card / RAM slots, etc. as fast as possible would seem to be best, correct? Well sure you can do that, but...

Re: Best Older Thinkpad for W10

I haven't run test logs, but the 3GB one is slower than the ones with 4GB. It's also true with W7 Pro / 64, the 4 GB ones run better. Of course the 8 GB setups I have are much faster, but I'm not upgrading all my backup T61 systems to 8GB because of the cost. The W530 has 32GB so that's a non-issue...

From my brief experience with the X3100 graphics in Windows 10, the experience was horrible. Lots of tiny graphical glitches here and there and crappy image quality on higher resolution panels (X61 should be fine). Install directly using the device manager? Also on a side note I am curious about you...

I have W10 running on a couple T61 with 3GB and 4GB Ram (I do need to upgrade that 3GB to 4GB), and they run ok. The W530 runs it fine. Huh I am wondering how much more free RAM you would actually get with this sort of upgrade... in my opinion, 3GB of RAM you can run x86 but with 4GB of RAM you can...

Yeah, "security" my eye. I no longer reward such behaviour with my hard earne...

Blackberry KeyOne and KeyTwo run Android and have physical keyboards but...I don't want Android unless I can root it/replace it and that's not an option with these. This is very likely caused by a fault on one trace of the membrane or the keyboard connector itself. First reseat the keyboard and clean the keyboard connector. If that doesn't work, then fixing might be very complicated and might involve with taking the entire keyboard apart and find the broken tra...

Even if you resolve the 3GB limitation with a T61 board and $80 of RAM, you are still limited to an aged chipset that even if not fully obsolete, is slow, and the deeper you tinker into the case the more you are prone to exposing fragility in the thin old plastics and overall first generation desig...
