"Retro" ThinkPad versus the Market: place your bets
Usability and longevity mean everything to me. I own (too) many portables, but the only portables that I enjoy using are the old X series (circa X200s). I even have an X61 that I saved from being scrapped. It's a very good Linux portable. "Retro" to me means a) the quality of the keyboard*, b) the a...

A few questions to update my knowledge
Ahoy everyone, it's time for me to... add more Thinkpads to my collection! (o: What's the best-equipped X-series laptop among the X20* models? By best, I mean CPU and screen. Something with cores and hyperthreading, and the best resolution possible. Among *all* the X series, which models have a Full...

Re: Finally found a solution for X61 T8300 heat
a newer, cooler mini-PCIe adapter was not sufficient Correct. It helped reduce the surface temperature of the palm rest by a couple of degrees. But the wireless dongle made a significant difference -- 10C at least. The dongle that I am using (dwa-131) is not the best but I prefer comfort. The hotte...

Finally found a solution for X61 T8300 heat
/* No, it's not to buy a new laptop. Thanks, I will try that setting later.
Edit: Later -- mariol90 is right, the power level for the Intel 6200 can be adjusted in Vista. With Transmit Power set to Medium, the right side of the palm rest cools by 1C to 2C in conjunction with the "Power Saver" power plan.

If you do massacre the screws that secure the wireless card and choose to use a rotary tool with a grinding bit to cut grooves into the screws, remember that sparks will fly and you will be holding the spinning grinding bit less that 2cm from the circuit board. So do try not to a) burn down your hou...

Is "2.5 IDE to mSATA" a viable upgrade for an IDE Thinkpad?
I thought my X32 was nearing obsolescence but then I saw this item on Famous Auction Site: 181138657851. It's a 2.5 IDE to mSATA housing. SSDs have become affordable and IDE hard disks are becoming rare. If anyone is using such an adapter, please share information about your hardware (adapter, mSATA...

Re: X32 question: Is there a compatible wireless N card?
For anyone else still using decaying hardware, here's the page where one can find the BIOS patcher: http://www.command-tab.com/2006/02/26/thinkpad-1802-error-fix/ The patcher worked on my X32 without a problem. Forget the TP-Link driver: it isn't certified for M-Windows XP. Here is the driver to use...

I have been reviving a stripped X61 that I recently bought. I added some components to the X61 and discovered what everyone else here knew long ago: the X61 with a stock Atheros wireless card is UNUSABLY hot. How hot? I used an infrared thermometer to measure the temperatures once the Atheros began ...

Re: LF 8GB RAM for X61
To all the above: Thanks for guiding me with your comments and advice. As you blokes note, the 4GB SODIMMs are expensive. I found a pair of 2GB SODIMMs of Kingston DDR2 on the Bay of E. The price was unbeatable after the Bay of E "bucks" discount. The X61 is a very nice Thinkpad. Now I see why other...

Re: Wireless N in older TP's possible? (up to now only wifi G)
Update!! I added VEN_168C&DEV_0029&SUBSYS2091168C in TpFnF5. (That is to say, including the subsys.) and, FnF5 started to work!! Then, I updated the driver to 10.0.0.54 (xp3264-10.0.0.54-whql), and the card is show as Qualcomm Atheros AR922x Wireless Network Adapter, and everything (Activity LED an...

X32 question: Is there a compatible wireless N card?
My X32 is still going strong and it's still better than any netbook that I have ever seen. I would, however, like to install a wireless N card if there is one that is known to be compatible with the X32. I detest Broadcom. I would prefer Atheros but I am open to any suggestions that are *not* Broadc...

No more Thinkpads *without* the touchpad?
Touchpad Hater here.
To my knowledge, the X series Thinkpads were the only portables that came without a touchpad, or that offered the option of no touchpad.
None of the new X series seems to come with the option of having no touchpad. Am I missing something or is this really the case?

The x120e and x130e are almost what I want in this price range. The X200 and X201 are solidly built and are excellent performers. You can find an X200 on Ebay for about $500.

TP models with known stress cracking
I have owned an X32 for several years and it is used every day for e-mail, Web research, and office documents. A stress crack has developed on the top right side of the palm rest, above the "IBM ThinkPad" insignia. The crack appears to have started in the upper left corner of the hard disk cover. It...

The LED 1440 x 900 screen is really the only requirement I have. It should be in good physical condition. I'd like to buy one within the next month or so. I use both the x200 and the x200s. The x200's screen resolution is good enough that I'm not persuaded it is worth it to spend hundreds more for ...

I used to own a T40; when I sold it, I forgot to include the spare battery in the sale. The spare was used as an alternate when I was travelling.
I don't know the condition of the battery but I do know that it was not abused. I have no means to test it.
