Re: Power cord and adapter for T43 made for the UK

Indeed, I do have about ten to twelve IBM adapters and a couple of Replacement Adapters, several of the IBM adapters are two-prong, and they work very well. My concern was with the UK machine and whether there was a need for a separate adapter. Actually, what I had used with the UK adapter was an ex...

Re: Power cord and adapter for T43 made for the UK

I found two with 4.5A, and used one of those. It worked fine! Win XP came up and I think later tonight, I will do some updates. But then, I will install Linux Mint 17.2, I'm hoping it will work with this T43. If not, I can always go to an earlier version, like Mint 16. Thank you for the swift help, ...

Re: Power cord and adapter for T43 made for the UK

Thank you, RBS. So I can use any one of my power bricks which I used with US T43 Thinkpads, correct? My typical power supply says 100-240V for Input and 16V for Output, but does no say anything about wattage. These would still be OK, I take it.

Power cord and adapter for T43 made for the UK

I haven't posted here in a while, partly because I was busy moving this summer, and then unpacking -- too many books, stamp albums, and of course, Thinkpads! I have been going through my collection, updating OSs (mainly Linux Mint) and so far things have been going very well. But I have hit a snag: ...

Re: Dual-booting Linux Mint 17 and Windows 10 on an R400

Temetka, thanks very much for the reply and the instructions on getting grub back in the situation described by that person in the link I added. Now, do you have any advice for my original problem, where, during the Mint 17 installation process, it does not see Windows 10 at all, and does not give m...

Re: Dual-booting Linux Mint 17 and Windows 10 on an R400

Addendum: The following post is a bit worrisome: The OP succeeded in creating a dual boot system with Linux Mint and Win 10, no idea what machine was used. Then, after a Win 10 update, grub disappeared and without a bootloader, neither OS could be accessed! He did get Windows accessed later, but not...

Dual-booting Linux Mint 17 and Windows 10 on an R400

Like many others, I have that infamous free Windows 10 offer sitting on my main desktop, a Win 7 Dell XPS 8700 with an i7 quad-core CPU. Since I did not want to install Win 10 on my "mainframe", but wanted to try it anyway, I picked up an inexpensive R400 in excellent shape and possessing a 160 GB S...

Re: GPU problem on a T42

Thanks. I also realized just now that I had mis-typed: I should have said the T42 motherboard is on its way, not the T41! Once I install it, I will post here and let people know how it went.

Cheers,

Re: GPU problem on a T42

RBS, Thanks for the suggestions. The T41motherboard is on its way, so I will check to see if it has those red spots. This is perhaps a dumb question: Can one add the epoxy oneself? What I mean is, can one get some red epoxy and add it to the corners, etc., to strengthen things? Once I get the T42 wo...

GPU problem on a T42

I had recently picked up a T41 and a T42 quite inexpensively, and gratefully, from Medessec, just so that I could tinker with the hardware and learn a few things. When they arrived the T41 worked fine and the T42 would not boot. Now this was exactly the opposite of what Medessec had told me -- that ...

Re: It's a Puzzlement: Frankenpad shutdown in Win 7

An update on my "new" T60p/T61 Frankenpad which had been suffering from abrupt shutdowns. I think the consensus here was correct, it was likely a heat problem. The seller changed everything inside the machine: fresh NOS motherboard, fresh T61p fan and heatsink, new X9000 chip, and all the rest of it...

Re: T43: An odd issue with the optical drive

Hans, excellent idea. This afternoon, I was thinking of getting one. Perhaps someone here in these forums might be willing to sell one. George, would you possibly have any spare external USB CD/DVD drives? I'll keep an eye out for an external CD drive which could work with Thinkpads, in the Marketpl...

Re: T43: An odd issue with the optical drive

These are good points, Ray and Neil. Thank you. I had not thought about the factory-pressed, commercial CDs and DVDs versus a burned DVD+R disc. Possibly because I had not had a problem with the burned discs so far. Now I'll be forewarned!

Re: T43: An odd issue with the optical drive

Very true, and that sort of issue has happened to me on T43s. But shouldn't that kind of deterioration also affect playback of music CDs or film DVDs? They both worked fine, and yet it refused to load software. That's what puzzles me.

T43: An odd issue with the optical drive

I was trying to load Linux Mint 17 on a recently (and cheaply) acquired T43, in very nice cosmetic shape, which I was planning to give to my brother who has become curious about Thinkpads. The MTM is 1872-4AU. The machine came with Zorin 9 installed, no Windows of any sort. Well, it would not load t...

Re: T400 - dead, brief LED flicker, black screen, any ideas?

It might help to check and see if the RAM sticks are seated properly. In older Thinkpads exhibiting similar symptoms, trying to start it with memory sticks removed one at a time can often help. Let's say you have two 512 MB sticks. If it starts with one stick removed, then that stick is likely bad. ...

Re: Upgrading memory on an A30

George, I tried one more time with Peppermint Four. This time I ran a check of my disc which I'd burned after downloading the OS last week. The disk was fine, so I thought I would try out the system first and see what it looked like before trying another installation. Once I got to the desktop, it h...

Why, thank you George. I do try very hard to be kind, it's just the way I am. I try to assume the best in others too -- I've been reminded by some friends that it is a failing! I will install the TPFancontrol program and do what you suggest as soon as the seller sends it back. It is on its way back ...

Re: It's a Puzzlement: Frankenpad shutdown in Win 7

Thanks for all the responses. It seems to be the consensus so far that the X9000 overheating could be the culprit ( with the possible dissent of George, who proposed that not installing the heatsink properly might be the cause. ). And perhaps George is right on the OS issue, Linux simply is not pick...

One other thing: the seller is going to replace the X9000 with a T9500, which does not tend to run as hot as the former.

It's a Puzzlement: Frankenpad shutdown in Win 7

Like the King of Siam, I am in a bit of confusion. I recently picked up a very nice T60p/T61 Frankenpad on eBay. The lid and plastic are 95% mint, no scratches or scuffs, except a tiny 1 mm nick on the lid. The screen is brand new Flexview SXGA+, it has a 256 GB Samsung SSD and an external Western D...

Re: Upgrading memory on an A30

Thanks George. I thought it would be unlikely that the A30 would support anything fancier than a Pentium 3M. And yes, I will try a different version of Peppermint. I see what you mean by Crunchbang being too spartan. I have some trouble with slow performance for the iceweasel browser. I'm hoping tha...

Well George, success at long last! I am writing this on the A30! I tried to install Peppermint Four, which I downloaded and burned. Re: Upgrading memory on an A30

Thanks, George. I'll give both Crunchbang and Peppermint a try. The former worked on a number of older Thinkpads for me, especially T23s. And I'll keep you posted.
