Re: Why THINKPADS & who's 2nd best ?
Well, Satellite is Toshiba's consumer line, I would never have high expectations of that. However, learning that the latest Portégés also suffer from reduced quality is a bit sad. Then again, it may be just a particular flaw of a specific model. It's not like DELL's Latitudes haven't had a history o...

Re: OS FOR AUDIO
Welcome to the forum. :) I do not know anything about audio recording on Linux. As for Windows, I do not know much, but just enough to say that there are often meaningful differences between different generations of Windows OS and available recording features. IIRC, certain things were "gimped" (lim...

An X6x by the looks of it, and I actually have no idea what that particular screw needs to be removed for.

Re: W530 freezing with VGA or Mini DVI port external monitor
Some laptops have an option in the BIOS to choose the video adapter. In others it is automatic. I am not sure how it is in this generation. To control the display output, if you are running Windows 7 or later, you can press Win+P and choose "external screen only" option. Fn+F7 may give you the same ...

Re: W530 freezing with VGA or Mini DVI port external monitor
Welcome to the forum.
Sorry to hear about your troubles. One possible explanation is that the some part of the GPU is going bad, but whatever part it is, it is only active with multiple screens / external screen.
Have you tried running the W530 with external monitor only (internal LCD disabled)?

I do have to disagree on durability though for the T410-T430, T510-T530, X210-X230, etc. The plastics on the palmrest and the bottom cover don't age as well as their Elitebook and Latitude counterparts. My T530 is only used for max 2 years and the fan vent plastics are brittle as crisps right now. ...

One thing that's very clear to someone who followed even a couple of criminal investigations in their lifetime - is that the investigative forces (be it the police, the FBI, or whatever equivalent you have in whatever country) and the prosecution have all the power and all the cards. They decide wha...

Re: No Windows Update for Windows 95/98/98SE/ME/2000
Overall for ease of application and completeness, SP4 is the better program for updating XP SP3. As long as this "unofficial SP4" is just a collection of official service packs and post-SP3 patches, I tend to agree. If it includes custom "hacks" and unofficial "backporting" of features from later W...

Thanks for the clarifications. I feel that the large variance of definitions and processes between the states is, perhaps, the biggest factor that makes it hard to get to the bottom of all the claims, and separate fact from fiction, especially for foreigners.

Re: How can I tell if an audio card is fried (and how to fix it)?
Since the sound through the headphone jack is fine, this suggest that the audio producing portion of the chip is intact. Given that two sets of speakers experienced the same issue, I would say the problem is somewhere in the circuit that detects something being plugged into the headphone jack. It se...

For new installations of XP it is still possible to get updates to SP3 from the Microsoft Update Catalog and manually install them. This is tedious to the point of impracticality. XP has Volume Licensing Keys that can be used and never require activation/reactivation. Plenty of them leaked and although Microsoft has blacklisted some early ones, many still work, and at this point I don't see why Microsoft will ever make them stop working. So getting an activated nag-free XP in...

True. And it works both ways actually.
Another technique (broadly employed by supporters of both parties): if something is good - it's due to our awesome administration. If something is bad - it's not our fault, but that of the previous terrible administration, who left us in this mess.

Or that he would become more presidential (yeah, whatever that means). My guess based on how people promote this term (and who these people are) that when they say "presidential", they imagine Obama - someone who is a smooth talker, with good manners. Trump is the complete opposite of that. Now, th...

It is possible that either the fan sensor / fuse on the motherboard was faulty to begin with, or due to a unfortunately coincidence it got damaged when you tried to start it with the new fan. Welcome to the forum. :) This is very strange behavior indeed. My first question - how did you determine it is due to the trackpad, and not, for example, the trackpoint? Have you tried leaving the trackpad disconnected / disabled in the BIOS, and verified that the issue goes away? As strange as it s...

The statement does strike me as overly broad, but the quality of the plastics is not directly related to survivability after falls. The cosmetic damage to the plastic is not necessarily correlated with damage to internal components. In terms of plastic quality, it is generally considered that the CS...
