Thanks for that info. I'm going to try to get a wireless card going in it, but if I settle for ethernet I'll get back to you.

WANTED -- DEAD OR ALIVE: 701C Battery

I need to upgrade my BIOS, and I'm looking for a battery that goes in a 700C or 700CS "Butterfly" ThinkPad. I plan to rebuild it, so working time is not important. It can even have minor leakage, as long as the contacts on the end are not corroded. MUST be a NiMH type, don't need NiCd. One FRU for t...

Re: Floppy Disk Drives and DOS Installation for 701c/701cs

Congratulations on bringing your Butterfly back to life at last. A floppy drive is a necessity on these old systems. You can even do a BIOS upgrade now, if you have a good battery.

What brand of 16-bit network card are you using? I need to put one in my 701C.

Re: Running Linux on ThinkPad390X and MiniPCI Wireless Cards

None of the models of the 390X came with internal WiFi. You'll need to put a PC-Card style network card in one of the two slots.

Someone else will have to answer the question about *nix.

Re: Floppy Disk Drives and DOS Installation for 701c/701cs

Actually, there is a DOS command to write the system files to any disk: SYS (for write SYStem files). Two problems: if you boot DOS on your exernal drive, it won't see the USB external hard drive. And, I don't think that would help you anyway -- the hard disk was partitioned and formatted in the T60...

Too bad, the cables are harder to find than the floppy drive (as you now know). Put a WTB in the Marketplace here in case somebody who does not monitor this forum has one. You can also "save" a search on eBay for the FRU and they will email you when one comes up for sale.

Re: Floppy Disk Drives and DOS Installation for 701c/701cs

You can go ahead and try Jack's method if you want -- it won't hurt anything. Usually, though, especially on these old units, there is some kind of a head/cylinder/sector mismatch between the two computers, and the drive will only work in the computer it was set up in.

Re: Floppy Disk Drives and DOS Installation for 701c/701cs

That's great. Any problem you can solve for 10 bucks is not a big problem :D

When your floppy drive arrives, boot from a DOS disk and type:

FORMAT C: /S

That will set up the boot tracks properly (and also wipe the drive clean -- make sure you want to do that).

Re: Floppy Disk Drives and DOS Installation for 701c/701cs

I don't know of a reliable way to do this without a floppy drive -- there are too many things to go wrong. I'd suggest posting a WTB in the Marketplace forum here, and searching on eBay for a floppy drive.

Re: Data recovery off of a PS/note?

Just checked my Microsoft Word 2007: it's easier than I thought. You can open Word Perfect files directly in Word. When you go to the open file screen, use the pull-down box for the type of file to select Word Perfect.

Re: [T42] 1802 Error now Resource Conflict

This error turned out to be a hardware problem: a bad connection around the mini-PCI card socket. Pressing on the motherboard causes the problem to come and go. The computer is rarely used on wi-fi anyway, so I just disabled it in BIOS.

Re: Data recovery off of a PS/note?

This should be easy to do. Word Perfect used to be the most popular word processor. As you said, copy the Word Perfect files to one or more floppy disks. I wouldn't mess around with old versions of the program. MS Word used to come with conversions for Word Perfect, WordStar, and others available on...

Re: Attempting to fix up a 380XD

Swapping the screens could work, but I've never tried it. You'll need to download the Hardware Maintenance Manual for both computers anyway, so look up the part numbers. On the CPU swap, the answer is no -- the motherboards have different chipsets. AAU: 266 MHz Pentium I, 430TX chipset EAU: 233 MHz ...

The $14.99 special turned out to be $24.55 after shipping and sales tax, but still the best price around. This rebate runs through June 18th. Fry's web site sucks. When you try to order them online the page jumps back to the previous screen with no message or anything. Turns out these are "special o...

Thanks for the information. Always nice to get the info from someone who works in the industry. I read in Wikipedia's article on Corsair that they started selling memory in the late nineties. Deals on 1 GB Memory for T42?

I'm looking for a couple of 1 GB PC2700 sticks for one of my T42's. I notice Frys has Corsair brand for $14.95 after a $25 rebate. Does anyone (Ray?) know anything about that brand? $30 is a long way from $114 for Crucial. Have there been any rebates on Crucial lately?

I received my card in good shape, but have not been able to get it working. This T42, a 2373-JTU, is still showing this error message at bootup: "ERROR Resource Conflict - PCI Network Controller in slot 01 Bus:02, Device:02, function 00". I finally got the correct driver installed (Version 4.1.2.156, file 77WC39WW), but the "Resource Conflict" error persists. I don't believe it's a driver problem ...

Can someone verify this card will work in a T42 with the latest BIOS (and without the no 1802 hack)? It's a Phillips branded 91P7301. The one I usually see recommended here is a 39T0081.

Re: Orange County 701c Drive Assistance Request

This is a fairly common problem on ThinkPad hard drives. Your 701C is probably using a different arrangement of heads/cylinders/tracks than your desktop. The solution is to run fdisk and format on the 701C first, then put the drive in the desktop to copy the files, then return it to the 701C. I don'...
