Re: Can you boot from an Express Card? *PIC*

An alternative to installing GRUB on the internal drive would be to install it on a USB flash drive and try chaining to the Expresscard SSD. This way the internal drive is left intact.

Re: Just acquired a W520...

Congrat's OP! The W520 is the system I am looking to get to replace my T410. I too wan't the quad and pretty much for the same reason you did - 4 RAM slots. I already have 2 8GB DIMMS ready for it. I plan on buying 2 more and an mSATA SSD. With 32GB of RAM I'll be able to run all the VM's I need and...

Re: 16GB upgradable, next laptop advice

Then I'd recommend the T430 or T450. The 440 has something weird with how they did the mouse buttons. Google som pictures of the T440 and you'll see what I mean.

We could provide better recommendations if you tell us what you plan on doing with the machine.

Re: Earphones work, Speakers Don't

Go into control panel and check your sound settings. See if the speakers are disabled.

You can also try re-loading the audio driver and see if that fixes it.

Re: Should I look for a W520 or buy something newer?

How portable do you need the system to be? I ask because the T420 is a 14" LCD and the T520/W520 is a 15" LCD. If you need it to be portable I'd go with a T420. But I own a T410 which I think is superior. My LCD has a lower res, but is 16:10 ratio vs the 16:9 on the T420. You sound like someone who ...

"Not gaming machines" No they are designed for business uses and CAD. That being said, many of them are quite capable at gaming. Before I quit, I used to play World of Warcraft on my T410. If I dialed the settings down I could get around 30fps. It would dip to mid 20's if I was doing casual raiding....

Re: Microsoft downgrades free OneDrive storage to 5 GB

They don't have to offer a single bit of storage for free and yet they give you 5GB. What is it you people want? 20GB? 1TB? Free? They had promised 15 GB storage for camera pictures. Don't forget it is not possible to change default cloud provider on Windows Mobile/Phone devices. Also their competi...

On the wobbly hinge issue, my T410 has this. If I put my finger on the top of the LCD and wiggle I get about 1/4" of play. Is there a simple fix? If not, I will live with it as it never really bothers me. It's just one of those "oh yeah, mine does that" things that pop up when reading the forums. Ot...

Re: W510 performance evaluation ?

No that's not normal. It sounds like your system is over heating and causing throttling. Have you repasted your CPU/GPU? You have an FHD panel, which is nice, but gaming at that resolution is going to be slow as you've noticed. Go into the game setting and drop everything to the lowest and see how i...

Re: Microsoft downgrades free OneDrive storage to 5 GB

I don't usually defend Microsoft, but the company is really impressing me lately. That being said WRT to this topic: They offered unlimited storage and some people decided "Hey I'll be a jackass and stick 75TB of data on my OneDrive." Thus killing Microsoft's goodwill. I don't blame them for downgra...

Micro$haft You lost me. They downgraded the service because some people ruined it for others. While 5GB might be a little stingy keep in mind it's free. Let's say they have 10 million people at 5GB each. That is 50 petabytes of space they have to provide. And backup/mirror so there is no data loss ...

I highly doubt it's as simple as you make it to be. There are incidents in the news of people being blackmailed for compromising pictures taken through their own webcam, and every single one of those I've seen mention that the RAT was installed by social engineering, not by software exploit. That t...

Hacking webcams is trivial. Scan a range of IP's, install RAT (remote attack) software on a machine. Sit back and enjoy the show. Yes, there are more than 2 steps, but I am not going to list them here. I've done this on my own equipment as an experiment, and yes it was very easy. I even did over a h...

I've switched to Bunsen Labs RC1. It's running on my Precision M4400 right now and it is running super smooth. I am really enjoying the minimalism of openbox and tint2 together. I've since stopped using KDE4 and now use only openbox. None of my systems are hurting for resources in any manner. But dear god, KDE and Plasma - while pretty - are very resource heavy.
