Installing OS/2 on Thinkpad T43

#1 Post by Qrani » Mon Mar 02, 2020 10:26 pm

Hello, I've been trying to install OS/2 on my new Thinkpad T43, which I may add, has the original HDD with original OEM install and recovery partition, but I always get an error when trying to install OS/2 on the part where I set video/network adapters, and put in username and password, and it has to restart, and when I restart, I get this:

Code: Select all

Exception in module:
TRAP 000d ERRCD=0000 ERACC=**** ERLIM=********

...

The system detected an internal processing error at
location ##0168:fff1ev1c - 000e:cb1c.
60000, 9084

078606d8
Internal revision 14.086_W4

The system is stopped. Record all of the above information and
contact you service representative.

I can't figure out why it always gives me this error, on this one part. I followed this forum post about installing OS/2 Warp 4.52 on a T43 viewtopic.php?t=120744, but even after following the steps exactly, I still always got the error.

Also, before the screen with the previous error, I always get this error:

Code: Select all

SYS1201: The device driver C:\OS2\BOOT\COM.SYS specified in the DEVICE
statement
on line 88 of the CONFIG.SYS file was not installed. Line 88
is ignored.

You will need to revisit this step because the trap is generated specifically when the wrong video is selected:
#12 you'll finally get to the setup screen, for video you MUST choose *Super VGA* (it's further DOWN in the list), DO NOT choose the default video selection that the installer thinks it wants. Else you'll get a trap error once the installer restarts.
Don't choose any networking devices, the 4.52 vanilla media does not have the drivers, those have to be installed later which is mentioned in my guide:
#4 OS/2 Broadcom ethernet driver
Follow Broadcom's official instructions to add the driver files in MPTS Network Adapters and Protocol Services. Remove the following from OS/2's startup folder: Network Messaging. You will need to manually configure OS/2 to run TCP/IP on DHCP on eth0: TCP/IP Configuration found under system setup.
Generally you don't want the Windows XP recovery partition, OS/2 prefers having a completely blanked disk to deploy its partitions. This is also mentioned in my guide:
#3 format the drive, I would advise to formatting it completely with MHDD or Nuke 'n Boot

I have searched through this forum and looked up the information on ibmfiles website and looks like you only able to install OS/2 on ATI based T43?

Am I correct that there is no way to install it properly on the lower end T43 Intel based machines and there are no workarounds found to this day?

It will most likely install fine but you'll have no video drivers (unless you're fine with that which I assume most people will not be as graphics will be unusuable on the OS at that point and I've not heard of anyone using OS/2 exclusively for its command line). There are no free workarounds because developing an entire driver is a lot of work.

As already mentioned ArcaOS has the panorama driver to work with Intel-GPU based T43s. It's not accelerated like the SciTech SNAP driver but hey, it works.
