Installing OS/2 Warp 4.52 in 2017
Installing OS/2 Warp 4.52 in 2017
After reading a rather long thread about installing OS/2 Warp 4.52:-
viewtopic.php?f=10&t=120744
I wonder if it would be useful to summarise the steps involved for anyone wanting to try without having to read and digest a long and very detaiied thread...
I'm about to try installing again from scratch, although I have around a dozen laptop disks with OS/2 installed from a year ago, but nothing I did to get it installed was documented, it was just a matter of trying a, b, and c and see if it worked. I have it installed on a 320GB disk and it boots on an X61. I'm currenty writing this on a T61 running Windows 7, but will see if this will boot up when I change disks.

I for one, would benefit from a write-up on OS/2 installation.
Like you, I did an installation on a T42p a year ago, but did not document my steps.
I DO remember it was a long and exasperating experience!
Through trial and error it finally did boot to an operating system.
I have several T60/61 systems and an X220 that are prime candidates for testing!
Regards.

I'm a bit confused... the installation steps are summarized in 14 points. And the text in red is mandatory to read.
In regards to drivers that will vary between what you install it on. If you want something simpler, use ArcaOS.

Re: Installing OS/2 Warp 4.52 in 2017
ArcaOS costs money, and quite a bit at that. I' m hoping to use freely available drivers and document what I managed a year ago.

Re: Installing OS/2 Warp 4.52 in 2017
I don't think $99 (which it is on sale) is that much. There's people who pay twice that amount for the horrible operating system known as Windows 10 ($199 for pro) which is basically throwing your money away.
Re: Installing OS/2 Warp 4.52 in 2017
Having gone through the process of installing OS/2 Warp 4.52 yesterday, I'm inclined to agree that $99 may not be a big outlay for the time lost trying to get the original version working, but some of us love a challenge. As far as Windows is concerned, Microsoft have been stealing people's money since before 1990 when you bore the cost of Windows when you bought a new computer whether you wanted Windows or not, because the price of a new computer already included a Windows licence. This practice, known as bundling is illegal, but has never bothered Microsoft. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bundling_(antitrust_law)

Re: Installing OS/2 Warp 4.52 in 2017
I installed OS/2 Warp 4.52 the other day just to see how easy it was, and although it installed on a T41, there are a lot of outstanding issues, the main ones being connectivity, ie no network access, and no access to removable media. Anyone trying to get it up and running ought to invest in an Ultrabay caddy like this one:-
https://www.amazon.co.uk/d/SATA-Hard-Dr ... abay+caddy
best to get an IDE and SATA version - that's assuming you have some spare disks hanging around. Also, I'd suggest when doing an initial install to format the install partition as FAT so that you can access it from other OS's. You need to do that so that you can add a network driver, without which you are basically stuck. It's not really surprising that the installation CD, which came out in 2001 does not have network drivers for an Intel 1Gb NIC in a laptop that came ou several years later. Similarly, there are PCMCIA drivers available for earlier models but not for the T41. I tried various ones but wihout success. Now
if only someone could come up with an OS/2 bootable USB stick, the whole process could be made a lot simpler.... Having said that, I came across such an image last year called USBBoot.img on the OS2WORLD forum, but whilst it booted to a command prompt, it was a self contained image using MEMDISK to boot and all the files were packed within an archive which I didn't know how to build.

They can do it with Linux ( https://www.slackwiki.com/Install_Slack ... lash_Drive ), maybe their instructions can help?
Lovely day for a Guinness! (The Real Black Stuff)
Re: Installing OS/2 Warp 4.52 in 2017
I don't actually recommend using FAT because you won't be able to install WarpZilla; disallowing you to use a modern browser (old OS/2 netscape is useless). For drivers, burn them to a CD-ROM if you're dealing with an old system. A better solution over FAT is to partition a JFS drive so it can be accessed by other JFS machines.N.B. If you choose FAT you'll be limited as to what you can install due to lack of long filename support; for instance you won't be able to install the latest WarpZilla package without HPFS/JFS which is a huge drawback.

I doubt it somehow since OS/2 is not available as a single bootable ISO... It might work with eCS though, but I've never heard of anyone trying and succeeding with any of these methods,

Re: Installing OS/2 Warp 4.52 in 2017
I think you misunderstand what I'm trying to do. You definitely won't be able access the Internet until you install the the correct NIC driver which you won't find on the OS/2 Warp Convenience Pack CD. Remember this is what I'm starting with, and I have no intention of using floppies. Since you don't have network access and you can't use USB or PCMCIA, as far as I can make out, you will have a hard job making the required drivers available to OS/2 if it is on an HPFS partition. You should see the FAT install as a staging post for eventually installing an updated version of OS/2.micrex22 wrote: ↑Wed Jun 14, 2017 1:57 pmI don't actually recommend using FAT because you won't be able to install WarpZilla; disallowing you to use a modern browser (old OS/2 netscape is useless). Re: Installing OS/2 Warp 4.52 in 2017
After getting an initial install of OS/2 up and running, which didn't take too much effort, I'm looking for a list of requirements to get the installation updated, I'd like to find the newest drivers for the NIC, USB and PCMCIA of a ThinkPad T41.
Any offers?
This might be worth reading, although I don't know uptodate it is:-
http://www.os2world.com/wiki/index.php/ ... ntrollers)
Actually, this says that OS/2 4.52 does come with some USB support, so It would be best to get that working first. Any offers on how to do that? I don't mean installing the latest drivers, but using the ones you get with the CD.

Just a quick update, I see there are 8 USB device drivers defined in CONFIG.SYS but they are all remmed out. I'll try enabling them and see if I can access a USB stick,
At the same time I'll comment out lines referring to COM.SYS and VCOM.SYS which always interrupt the boot process. Don't know how to stop them getting installed.

Re: Installing OS/2 Warp 4.52 in 2017
You don't use floppies for OS/2 4.52; the ISO has a virtual floppy directory that it swaps on its own accord. If you're trying to upgrade 4.0 to 4.52, that just seems like extra painful work, I don't know if 4.0 was ever supported on the T41.karotlopj wrote: ↑Wed Jun 14, 2017 2:11 pmI think you misunderstand what I'm trying to do. Using FAT for an OS/2 installation is just not a great idea due to its many limitations.
HPFS can be accessed by non-HPFS computers with special tools. It's not impossible, and there is a bootable version of DOS that has HPFS support.
Re: Installing OS/2 Warp 4.52 in 2017

Does the CP2 CD come with Broadcom drivers? In any case I have an Intel PRO/1000 on my T41 and that isn't listed. And that is the point I'm making. How do I get it installed if I can't get it onto my computer? I can't use floppies because there is no floppy drive and I can't burn CDs.micrex22 wrote: ↑Thu Jun 15, 2017 1:43 pmThe same way any network drivers are installed in the classic MPTS for any network card (these instructions are for the broadcom .NIFs but the same still applies):karotlopj wrote: ↑Thu Jun 15, 2017 9:02 amThe latest NIC I could find was on Hobbes:-

Re: Installing OS/2 Warp 4.52 in 2017
I assume you have the USB FDD and Legacy Floppy Drives activated in BIOS/Startup/Boot?
Re: Installing OS/2 Warp 4.52 in 2017
Strangely enough I just inherited a fully functional T41 the other day. I'll try throwing OS/2 Warp on it and create a "driver package" like I did with the T43 at some time as a future project (can't guarantee when that'll be), but it's a lot easier to discuss something and find problems when you own the actual device.
Re: Installing OS/2 Warp 4.52 in 2017
If you manage to get the USB drivers which come with CP2 working, ie allow access to USB drives/sticks, please let me know. Apparently they do work, but I couldn't get them configured.
I'm also attempting to put together a few command files to get the system up and running rather than going through the GUI install which can be error prone due to misinterpretation or overlooking something.

Hi......New to this site, but not new to Thinkpads at all.
I have a T60P, and would like detailed help from the experts here
step by step on installing 4.52 on a T61. I know this is an arduous
process, but I have so many copies of "warp" that I would like to

If anyone can help me here, to get this up an running, I would
really really appreciate it. I am older now, but when I was younger,
I could do this no problem. Now, I need someone who has the time,
and patience to write me a detailed sequence of instructions so I
can do this.

Re: Installing OS/2 Warp 4.52 in 2017
It -technically- is since you can make yourself a single DVD image and have it boot without referencing multiple CDs (just like how ArcaOS does it).karotlopj wrote: ↑Wed Jun 14, 2017 1:59 pmRealBlackStuff wrote: ↑Wed Jun 14, 2017 6:34 amThey can do it with Linux ( https://www.slackwiki.com/Install_Slack ... lash_Drive ), maybe their instructions can help?

And, they've recently added USB bootable support, so you can just throw it on a USB stick.
The T60 was never officially supported on vanilla OS/2. You'll be missing so much even if you manage to get it installed. Just use ArcaOS, it also has panorama to get unaccelerated video support.earthcurve289 wrote: ↑Tue Aug 29, 2017 3:51 pmHi......New to this site, but not new to Thinkpads at all.

apply updates or if you already have a newer ISO.

Hi,
I have the same problem with os / 2 warp 4.52 on IBM T42, the usb is not recognized and an external usb floppy drive is not recognized either,
the legacy floppy box is checked, therefore impossible to install drivers.
any idea ?
Unless you have software for win xp or windows 10 that can read the hpfs system, in these cases you just have to remove the disk,
connect it using a 2.5 "44 pin usb adapter and copy the drivers on it.
EDIT:
i have copied all drivers on cd-rom and copied drivers from cd rom to disk, now all is ok, ati graphics drivers is installed and intel pro 1000 is installed
but tcpip not work, i have configured nameserver, ip addres, gateway, hostname ...
