T42 Support OS/2 !!

#1 Post by BillMorrow » Thu Jun 03, 2004 11:43 am

The question was posed to me from a long time OS/2 user, by telephone,
as to whether the T42 DID in fact, support OS/2..

SO, i asked and here is the reply:

Software requirements: The following operating systems support the ThinkPad
T42 computer:

o OS/2 Warp(R) Convenience Package 2 V4.52 Refresh MCP2 Refresh: XR_4503 with
FixPak XR_C004, or later, and XR_D003, or later

o OS/2 Warp Convenience Package 1 V4.51 MCP1: XR_4501 with FixPak XR_C004, or
later, and XR_D003, or later

o OS/2 Warp Convenience Package 2 V4.52 MCP2: XR_4502 with FixPak XR_C004, or
later, and XR_D003, or later

o Microsoft Windows 98 Second Edition with USB 1.1 support

o Windows 2000 Professional (no service pack, SP1(R), SP2(R), SP3, SP4) with
USB 2.0 support

o Windows XP Professional (no service pack, SP1, SP1a) with USB 2.0 support

o Windows XP Home (no service pack, SP1, SP1a) with USB 2.0 support

o Windows NT(R) 4 (SP6a) with limited USB 1.1 support

Excellent Bill! I have OS/2 Warp 4.52 on a T30, T40, T41 and now all I need is a T42! So glad to hear that OS/2 is officially supported!

In any case, use pci.exe to sniff out the actual hardware on the Thinkpad as many features are supported by OS/2 drivers, too, even if not officially listed under "supported" by IBM.
eComStation 1.2 installed without a hitch here on a T42p (2373-X41). Only things not supported are the win-modem and the Intel Mini-PCI 802.11b wireless card.

The 10MB WiFi card version does have OS/2 support.
Check for the drivers on the Internet (IBM and/or Intel's web site).
When on IBM's web site you might need to go to an earlier Txx model,
as IBM doesn't always update the TP driver matrix for OS/2 correctly (IBM no longer wants to list OS/2 in to many places).
.
Unless you know something I don't, the driver for the Intel wireless 802.11b was never written. I have drivers for the Orinoco, Prism and Cisco cards and currently use the Cisco 340/350 driver with a PCMCIA card. I also have an older Cisco 340 PCMCIA and an IBM High Rate wireless PCMCIA card in my children's laptops (running eCS as well).

The only MniPCI chipset that has a driver is the Prism chipset. The released drivers (for the IBM High Rate and the Mini-PCI Prism cards) are only available either via IBM Passport Advantage subscription or via eComStation. The Cisco and the Orinoco driver were betas that were in limited circulation.

Unfortunately the developer has disappeared. :-( I haven't heard from Jens in over a year now. I had been an early beta tester of both the Orinoco and Cisco drivers.

However all is not lost as there are reports of win32 wireless drivers working with a beta version of the GenMac driver. In fact there will be an article on this in an upcoming issue of the VOICE Newsletter. I have heard that the GenMac actually works with the Intel win32 drivers for both the 802.11b and the 802.11g cards. Unfortunately they can't get it to work with Thinkpads for some reason.
