WTB: i7-3xxxQM with VT-d in UK
WTB: i7-3xxxQM with VT-d in UK
I may still have some interest in this for another T520:
Hi,
I'm in the market for a nice i7-3xxx quad core for a T520/T530 upgrade.
A little torn on how powerful it needs to be..
Over 5k mark on https://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu_list.php
would be nice though I'd settle for 4.4k+
So I don't mind a 35Wt or a 45Wt part, 55Wt might be an overkill
I don't want my cooling to sound like an HVAC
I definitely would require VT-d as it's essential for running Windows in a VM on Linux
Sadly accessible performant and relatively cheap i7-3630qm doesn't have VT-d, many others do have it though
I'm still not decided if I will be upgrading T520 motherboard to T530 but if you have spare coolers for either of these types - or even a T530/W530 motherboard - lying around I might have a use for them too
There is no lack of these CPU-s on ebay however these are mostly from China and actually I wanted to probe you guys for a nice price too
I'm in the UK but if it's simpler the parcel could be sent to a friend in Germany - because UK deliveries seem a bit fussy since 2021-01-01
Thx!

Unfortunately putting a T530 board in a T520 chassis is not simple. The bottom cover has the displayport and esata ports being different, the palmrest have a few plastic pieces not lining up, and the magnesium frame is not the same. At that rate you are better off buying a T530 halftop and then swap your T520 lid there. Your T520 battery will also need you to flash EC mod on the T530.
Wouldn't the sandy bridge CPU's work? Do they not have the VT-d thing?

Re: WTB: i7-3xxxQM CPU with VT-d UK/DE
Right, T520 has got a Display Port while T530 has got a mini-DP. That seems similar to X220 vs X230.
esata - is that actually different? The photo I could find looks very similar to my T520.
I think I'll risk it. I expect to be left with a hole around mini-DP like when fitting X230 mobo into X220 chassis. I hope to have no other trouble with the bottom cover.
My understanding was when doing classic keyboard mods on X230, T430, T530 the simplest option is normally just to take the palmrest from the matching *20 model.
Isn't that the case here? I was going to keep the keyboard and palmrest from my T520
I heard they were "minimally different". Could it be you actually can fit T530 mobo onto T520 frame?
One particular "upgrade kit" I've got my eyes on is T530 mobo + structure frame though, so yes I'm aware of the difference
Well that mod is also required to use a *20 keyboard so I'm fine with that
Of course they do have it! i5-2520M which I'm running now certainly has it
I was surprised some of i7-3xxxQM don't have it!
I was particularly upset that i7-3630QM doesn't have VT-d
So Sandy Bridge CPU-s do work but I guess I'm looking for more omph..
All in all I'm still looking for that CPU, one way or another I'm going to use it in a T520 or T530 machine or some hybrid of the two
If Santa brought me a W530 mobo or suitable fan/heatsinks for T520 or T530 at a reasonable cost I wouldn't refuse either
Anybody got a spare i7-3xxxQM with VT-d?
Doesn't have to be the very top of the line

Re: WTB: i7-3xxxQM CPU with VT-d UK/DE
I have actually just bought a complete W530. Nice package.. But darn!
- is it not the case that this Nvidia Quadro K2000M is going to give me tears under Linux?
- nVidia Optimus (switching between discreet and integrated graphics on as-needed basis) is not really supported on Linux? (Bumblebee project hasn't seen much action since 2013 it seems)
- and it is a fact that I can't use an external monitor when graphics is set to "Ingegrated" in W530 BIOS
So it seems on Linux I can
- either enjoy 32Gb RAM with W530 but with problematic graphics
- or be limited to 16Gb RAM but have solid experience with integrated graphics
It seems now I need to sell this W530 mobo + fan + 170Wt PSU + possibly RAM. How difficult do you think would it be to get rid of a W530 mobo in the UK?..

I believe you can still use VGA under that setting, but I know the digital outputs are connected to the discrete GPU.
You could just sell the T520 at this rate if you are fine with that

Re: WTB: i7-3xxxQM CPU with VT-d UK/DE
It's true that I'm going to have one T520 too many,
but it's also quite difficult to let go of this hardware..
- spares
- guinea pig for cruel BIOS experiments
- it's just nice - no faults whatsoever
I wonder if they would fetch much these days anyway
He he, I have decided on a solution for that, as I described in this forum post, I'm going for an el-cheapo eGPU. That's the ony way - for me - to get video out of W530 w/o switching on nVidia on digital outputs:
On the other hand I think I've always wanted a W530 with all its might. I'm actually torn between using it as my daily developer's machine (for its 32Gb ability) with nVidia off and an actual Windows machine for messing with photo/video or even.. launching an occasional game.. Too many optionsraiser, 12V 2A psu, cable, 18Wt RADEON HD 6450 1GB SILENT, random el-cheapo ExpressCard to butcher, some elbow grease to rework the ExpressCard
Hmm.. it has come up to £30 already. And in the final state I wouldn't mind enclosing it into Akasa Tesla T which is another £50 or so..

If you want a true guinea pig of T520, use mine with the burnt out power management chip so it can't charge batteries but everything else works fine
And if it dies as a result you don't feel bad because the board is dying anyway
Huh you are planning to go that route with a W530...atagunov wrote: ↑Sat Apr 10, 2021 4:49 amOn the other hand I think I've always wanted a W530 with all its might. If I were you though, unfortunately I would just go with a HP Zbook or Precision M4700 as with their modular MxM graphics, you can go either AMD or NVidia and either consumer or workstation graphics. Surely something like a GeForce GTX 4xx series are gonna work great with linux...
The W530 kind of slot inbetween those chunkier workstation notebooks and standard business class notebooks...
