Need an IDE HD for my T42

#1 Post by oeuvre » Wed Dec 07, 2011 10:50 am

For my IBM Thinkpad T42 laptop, great machine but the original HD died on me today. Does anyone have a 2.5" IDE hard drive, preferably 7200RPM available? 5400RPM would be okay. I'm in the US and a college student so I'd rather not spend a lot of money on a new HD since the prices are jacked up due to the Thailand floods. Thanks a lot.

Welcome to the forum! :-)

While I hope that you may receive interesting offers for a 2.5" PATA HDD (NB: Any minimum desired/required capacity or is, say, 40 GB enough?), you might want to check e.g. the following threads: FS: Memory,Drives,Docks,KB,WIFI,Battery,AC,SXGA+ LCD Dec.6 (search for 2.5" PATA (ATA/IDE) Laptop Hard Drives on the first page) or TRADE: T43 Travelstar 100GB 7200 RPM PATA for SATA drives (rare!!) or FS: 2.5" IDE hard drives for laptops. 20-30-40GB

You'll probably get a wider selection looking on eBay.

Just be careful buying on ebay, many people actually list dead parts for sale, some even adding in the description that they know they are dead, while others are more sneaky and just say "untested".

I do have some of these drives, but the only one's I'm not using would be less then 40GB. I usually don't like to sell used drives, especially one that is worth $20 or less because no one is going to be happy if they pay to ship the thing and it dies, and the amount of time it takes to install and test prior to shipment wouldn't even be worth the sale price, so between selling, or sitting on the shelf in case I ever need it, the latter seems the better option.

Besides, I'm sure there are many users here that will offer you one soon, but if you're in a jam and can't find one, feel free to PM me and maybe we can work something out, or maybe you have something I could use in exchange.

Good luck in your quest

I have 60 GB PATA IBM p/n 39m0165 5400 rpm Made by Fujitsu for IBM. MHV2060AS
$35 dollars shipped, via Paypal, which is a good price I believe even before Thailand sunk into the sea.

Its a pull from a R51 which had the GPU on the MB fail.
It was in fine condition until the GPU. A week DOA/Functionality guarantee.

Also have a 6 cell battery for the R51 which should fit your T42, was good for 2+ hours as I recall, holds charge. 20 shipped on that.
Its a true IBM battery, meaning you can let it charge overnight without thinking its gonna burn up in the middle. It was at about 70% life of original recall, I will guarantee the 2 hours at normal usage level, it was being used with a 15 inch flexview which should have been a worse case as far as screen battery drain.

So yeah, 35 for the 6O GB

Thanks for all the offers, folks.

Sorry for not replying... someone on irc.freenode.net suggested a 160GB Samsung IDE I got off amazon for $65. Not bad considering the HD prices right now...

Anyhoo, I spent a few days re-installing XP SP3, drivers, software, Windows Update, etc. The new HD is noticeably faster.
