Hi guys,
I have an extra R51 I thought I'd post on here. It's model 1830-AC1, features:
15" SXGA+ display (1400 x 1050)
1.7 GHz Pentium M (Dothan)
ATI Mobility Radeon 9000 video card
512MB RAM
20GB HD (Hitachi DK23CA-20), OS image leaves 9.xx GB free
Intel 2200BG wireless internet (installing new one cause last one got wonky)
CD-RW and DVD-ROM combination drive
S-video TV output
VGA monitor output
2 USB 2.0 ports, infrared, microphone, speakers
TrackPoint and TrackPad both work beautifully
XP Pro SP3 installed and updated, COA and activation key included
Microsoft Office 2010 installed and updated (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, OneNote, Publisher)
AVG 2013 and MalwareBytes installed and updated
The computer runs really well, I omitted all the Microsoft.NET Framework updates to keep the OS image small and snappy. Includes the OEM IBM AC adapter which still works perfectly - my multimeter shows it at 16.5v. For a US buyer I can include the OEM battery which only holds about a 10-15 minute charge at this point; for an international buyer I have to ship without battery due to shipping regulations so you'll want to provide your own unless you choose to run strictly on AC power (it will boot and run without any battery attached). A replacement battery on eBay is currently $20 for generic and $30 for OEM, but you'd have to check shipping costs to your destination.
I've also done a good bit of research on upgrading this machine, and here's what I've found is possible and the current cost:
Hard Drive: (takes 2.5" PATA (44-pin IDE) hard drives)
5400RPM 40GB HD: $20
7200RPM 60GB HD: $52
8 GB KingSpec Solid State Drive: $30
16 GB KingSpec Solid State Drive: $37
64 GB USB Flash Drive: $25
RAM (takes PC2700 DDR333 SoDIMM RAM or faster DDR)
1 GB (2 x 512MB): $15
2 GB (2 x 1GB): $41
CPU Processor:
Intel Pentium M 745 1.8 GHz: $13
Intel Pentium M 755 2.0 GHz: $28
Intel Pentium M 765 2.1 GHz: $40
If you're interested in any of those upgrades right now, I can order and install them prior to shipping, otherwise you can save this list for your own future reference.
For anyone on this board I'd like to get $110 plus shipping, which exactly covers my net cost after receiving a subsidy. I bought it from the local university (Arizona State) as part of their technology replacement program for $150, installed Microsoft Office, and am replacing the wireless card. I bought it for my grandparents to use but another family member also got them an iPad so they determined they won't need this machine after all and subsidized my investment by $50. If the price is too high don't feel bad skipping over this one, as I think I could do even better on local Craigslist. I'm just trying not to lose money on the deal and am willing to offer it to a board member at the break-even level if anyone is in need of a fully-functional machine from the pure IBM days. Feel free to send a PM with any other questions. It should be all set and ready by the end of the week as soon as I replace the wireless card. Thanks for reading!
