Wanted to make sure you saw the "donation"

Also my sons T61 is BSODing (darn it) Im working through drivers, but suspect the GPU its a TYPE 7663-A34.

Whats an Intel board going to run me?

Thanks
Ron
Hi Ron, it might be a good idea to run the laptop off a Linux live CD and see if it is still unstable before spending a lot of time on drivers. If it crashes on linux you can be sure it's hardware.

I have some new NOS boards for that model, both Intel and nVidia with a 2010 dated gpu, and a couple used boards too. I'll send you a PM with the options available.

My T60P (15" flexview) has recently died (no power or battery Lights, won't boot), the remove all power and push power button 10 times trick revived it a couple times, then replaced internal lithium button battery and it worked a little while longer, but now completely unresponsive (no lights, won't boot, remove memory won't beep)

After pricing T60/61s on ebay I'm wondering if frankenpad kits are still available?

I've replaced a T42P motherboard (actually bought a T42 with a broken screen and transplanted the mobo) and a T30 LCD screen, so I'm not afraid of taking Thinkpads apart and rebuilding them. I'm Just not handy with/nervous about cutting and drilling.

Thanks

Welcome to the forum "latenight." I am with you. When I take things apart, I get to a point where I wonder and worry a little that I won't be able to put it back together. I was actually thinking about buying dead laptops and practicing on them and taking them apart entirely piece by piece and reassembling them.

Hello latenite,

just do it,
I had the support of TuuS and RealBlackStuff two years ago and, as a used board died this winter, TuuS again was helpful.

(1) Exchanging the motherboard is rather easy, if You follow the advice from both of them. (Some rather small mechanical changes have to be done, but these are not "demanding" and their help makes it easy).

(2) Some spares should be in order:
- You ought to have a set of new screws, to follow the guidelines of IBM/Lenovo,
- You ought to have arctic silver, in order to effectively secure cooling via the new fan-assembly,
- You ought to have a new and sufficiently strong fan-assembly, in order to achieve the neccessary cooling,
- You need DDR2 sodimm memory (should try 2x4Gb) and a different CPU, as TuuS advised me a Penryn T9500 should do...
and, before all,
- You should have a new(!) board as TuuS did sell, may be there are some still.

I did exchange a conventional UXGA-IPS-TFT against a LED-UXGA-TFT, too. That is quite another Story: You need that kind of Display and (!) a modded Inverter. So if and only if RealBlackStuff still has such modded Inverters it could make sense trying that, if You are able to acquire such a LED-UXGA-TFT as TuuS sold.

You need a little bit more experience and especially soft and smart fingers to achieve that change, I nearly missed...

Good luck,
if You succeed You 'll have a NB that should serve You quite some years ...

Sincerely Yours

Yes I still have kits available, there are quite a few options so it will probably be best to send me a PM and we can discuss what best meets your needs.

ps. this isn't anything to be concerned about, I can walk you through the process. It takes me about 5 mins or less using a dremel tool, or you can even do it with a hacksaw blade or file if you don't have a dremel or a die grinder.

I've gone a step further for Frankies:
- remove the modem-socket from the motherboard
- use a Dremel to grind about 1.5 - 2 mm from underneath both modem-card supports
- (no more hacksaw or similar)
- put a piece of electrician's tape where those supports 'float' above the motherboard

And as for LED-screens: don't forget the LCD-cable, which needs to be modded as well!

"[RBS]: And as for LED-screens: don't forget the LCD-cable, which needs to be modded as well!"

speaking of LEDs, i'm thinking of building a frankie soon but would really like an LED instead of CCFL. does anyone have thoughts on/experience with either of these kits: http://www.xccfl.com/product_info.php?products_id=4727 or http://www.iccfl.com/product_info.php?products_id=5618. seem like a reasonable deal at around 50 buck each after shipping.

There are some major drawbacks to converting your current screen by changing the backlight, the major one is the odds of destroying the panel in the process as it's far from a drop in process, however with as rare as these Hydis LED panels have become it may be your only option. I'm not sure if RBS would be willing to install one of those kits for you and if he did it would probably depend on the manufacturer of your panel, but if you can get one of the Hydis LED panels I'm sure he'll convert your cable and inverter.

I'd advise messaging him directly regarding this.

I have listed a complete LED backlit UXGA panel and lid - everything from the hinges up - in the Marketplace for sale now. I am considering selling a second one also, although it's attached to a Frankenpad.

But the lid I'm offering now was built for me as a spare (I thought I was having problems with another one) by RBS back when panels were commonly available.

Pictures are in the listing. It's just a matter of dropping it in.

Cheers,
Bret

Rather similar... twice as wide ... and in summer, I meant summer....

In winter our creek has a depth of about 2 meters, takes all widths it can and hurries direction North-east, and it is no more clear but has earthen-colours ... (dont know how to add a smal photo)

Happy trails

The price changes at usps are beyond confusing. They have added a new "fragile" tag which more than doubles the price on top of the rate hikes and no clear explanation of how that effects things like insurance claims and exactly how "fragile" something has to be before you are required to tick that box, so for now I'm only going to make a modest increase in rates, adding $5 to the domestic price increasing it to $20 and $5 to the international rate increasing it to $40, and there will be an additional $5 for each additional kit if shipped together.

I will be away from early in October until the 18th 2016, so unless I can make arrangements with someone locally I won't be able to ship any kits in this time frame, but can still take orders up until the end of September and resuming again after the 18th.

Kits are again available, free NOS motherboard upgrades still available, and an optional NOS T61p fan upgrade is available for $20

I agree, as do many members here. This has been a very successful post and I was able to help many members breath life into their aging T60 models. The procedure is pretty straightforward and I provide illustrated photos on the minor modifications required to do these mods, but what really set things off was the new NOS boards, because prior to them there was severe risks involved with the nVidia graphics, and not long ago we had no idea these boards even existed.

If you have a timetable for when you want to do this we could plan out the upgrade and reserve one of the boards for you.

I'm interested in a kit, but it's not 100% obvious from the first post if a 15" flexview lcd is included. Do I need to source that, or does it come with this kit? Thanks!

An LCD is not part of the kit, you need to source that yourself.

I don't currently have any flexview screens available, but do have the parts for a few of these kits and also offer the new NOS nVidia boards separately.

Hello Tuus,
Would you be able to convert my ThinkPad T60p with T7600 CPU to a X9000 CPU with 8 GB Ram?
If I supplied my T60p with my SSD and power adapter what would be the cost?
Sincerely, LapidesFamily in sunny California

Hi,

I already responded to your PM, but for the benefit of others I'll state that I'm currently not interested in doing the conversions myself (for medical reasons). That may change at some point, but I'm happy to help members with their build, and building one of these Frankenpads is the best part IMO.

Some info that could be of concern to Frankenpad builders: It's come to my attention that one of the modified bios that is mostly used for 1066mhz or quad-core mods which can also be used to undervolt the graphics system and on at least two cases this action has caused motherboard failure. A low voltage condition can be dangerous to some components, so I highly recommend that you avoid undervolting these graphic systems, or if you must do so, then be very conservative with the voltages. I don't believe there is any risk associated with undervolting the CPU chip. I also have no info to suggest the bios in question is dangerous in anyway if the graphic voltages are not altered.

Also, since the major benefit to undervolting is to reduce temps, and I don't believe the temp was a major factor in the earlier 2007 and early 2008 gpu chip issues, rather heat cycling, so undervolting to make it run cooler probably wouldn't extend life anyway, and it now appears could harm the motherboards.

I will be on vacation soon so won't be able to put together any of these kits from sept 20 to october 20 (approx). I will have the motherboards available while I am away and there is still time to get one of these kits shipped before I leave if it's ordered soon.
