For Sale: IBM Thinkpad 701c (Working Unit, USA)

Greetings,

I just listed my 701c on EBay. I no longer see very many units available for sale of the quality mine is:
http://r.ebay.com/rxwQQa

Unfortunately, it was discovered that the memory chip which is soldered onto the motherboard has errors on bootup and running diagnostics. The expansion memory chip seems fine. Unfortunately, this means the value of the unit has decreased since replacing the motherboard is the only option to fully restore the system. I will be decreasing the opening bid of my EBay listing in consideration of this problem.

Otherwise, the system is functional and even boots into Windows 95, but only when in Safe Mode. It locks up booting Windows normally.

I am in the USA and would consider shipping International but my EBay listing is for now only for USA buyers. I can re-list or modify the if there is International interest.

Thank you for reading and I hope you will bid!

Thanks,
Eric

Does memory error mean the same thing as needs the motherboard replaced?

From what I can tell, one of the memory modules has an error. I have not looked into how to replace it or what cost that would be. This error only popped up recently and also the motherboard passes the BIOS diagnostic tests (see EBay listing pictures).

Thanks,
Eric

You may want to remove the additional module and prove the trouble to it that way...

The memory error is only fixable with a new motherboard if you remove the add-in memory chip and the error is still there. I would definitely be interested in buying it but you can see I also have one for sale on ebay right now at a lower price....cosmetics not nearly as good but with a new motherboard and no errors.

Good idea. I'll try to make time to do that tomorrow.

Thanks,
Eric

Hi Eric Murphy,

I am interested on this laptop, It seems to be cosmetically good looking and I intend to use it to play old applications. I understand a motherboard change may be required.

Could you please clarify:

- How is the casing, specially around the edges of the battery inlet?

- Is the battery included? (I certainly prefer, even if damaged so I would re-furbish it myself)

- I am not keen to have the external floppy, could the floppy drive be separated from the sale?

- Would you be able to hold on me to pay you after the 15th March (payday)

and

- Would you deliver to Perth, WA, Australia?

cheers,
