What's the deal with R/T60 widesceen fans?
What's the deal with R/T60 widesceen fans?
My daughter and I both have R60 15.4" widescreen units; One fan has failed.
Poking around on ebay there are very different looking (and costing) fans all
purported to be the right part.
Also it's an assembled unit. Is not replacing just the fan done at all?
Is there a better (perhaps lower power or more quiet) part that can be used instead?
Thanks in advance.
P.S. one also has a glitchy power connector. could somebody show me a url to fix that; this has to be an "easy" solder fix, right? Tnx.

You've been looking in the wrong place. Replacing a HSF unit is definitely an option. Contact TuuS or place an ad in the marketplace.

Here's a movie that shows how to replace a motherboard: http://www.laptopinventory.com/LaptopIn ... otherboard
You can use that as a base.
You only need to go as far as taking out the chassis with the motherboard.
Then you can access the little screw that holds the yellow DC jack in place.
Remove the screw and unplug the white DC connector from the motherboard.
Put in a new DC jack, don't forget the little screw!
Then put the chassis back in the base and reassemble.

HSF=Heatsink/Fan assembly.
I have several of these for the T61 with Intel graphics which will also work on T60, but the R series has a different fan and since they were made in smaller quantities, there is less supply and they are more costly. YOu can generally replace just the fan, but sometimes it's not easy to find the correct one.
As far as the power connector goes, I have several of them and it's a pretty easy fix once your fan is removed. You can avoid much of the disassembly by just removing the fan and lower cover, the the power jack can be easily replaced, but I would recommend inspecting your power supply cord, make sure the problem isn't with it instead.
