FS: (almost) ALL of my ThinkPads UPDATED/LOWERED 06/15

#1 Post by ajkula66 » Sat May 04, 2013 8:09 am

Whoever thought I was kidding when I said that I'll be getting rid off the vast majority of my ThinkPad collection was wrong...yes, that time has come. I'm giving all of these a couple of days on the forum before I start selling them through other channels...

A couple of general notes:

a) AC adapters are NOT included unless the description states differently.

b) Operating system is loaded from the original IBM/Lenovo recovery disks and matches the COA, with partition intact, unless stated otherwise.

c) Upgrades are available, as well as downgrades, within reason.

Indeed.

We can thank Lenovo's change to keyboard layout for that one...

George why are you suddenly moving to the HP Elitebook? is it because of the screen? or other reasons?

I would like to know as well, George. I find this pretty troubling. Mind telling us?

BTW, I would buy all of these ThinkPads from you if I had the money (I'm broke as a joke right now). I could use them for my TP collection.
ThinkPads: R51 (1836HAU), T41 (23737FU), 600 (264551U), T60 (2008VRQ), T500 (224255U)

I Love (all) ThinkPads...ThinkPad forever!

Well, the fact that Lenovo killed the old keyboard layout had sealed the deal. If I have to learn to type all over again, I may as well be looking at a proper LCD in the process...

I really don't need all of these machines, and while I wouldn't mind keeping some of them, the fact of the matter is that they'll just collect dust if I don't sell them. Keeping a couple of best-loved examples, and moving away from ThinkPads which are becoming everything I positively hated about other laptops over the past decade or so...

I'm not familiar with Elitebooks, but don't they also have an island keyboard as well? One of the consulting companies we work with has also HP Elitebooks, I was working with those guys last week and all of them had 8560p, which also had 6 rows island keyboards and a (very dark) 16:9 screen

Coming back to topic, if it weren't for the shipping costs over the pond and the customs fees they would charge me, I would also get some of those nice machines. it's a shame you're selling the Z61m! That's a unique one!

Correct. Island all the way. My peeve is the layout, though, and I find HP's to be slightly less atrocious than the new ThinkPad one. And of course, Dream Color panels are vastly superior to anything that Lenovo has to offer.

A review of EliteBooks in German c't magazin said that
- in a quiet room, the sound from the fans was perceived as being disturbing, and that
- the metal palm rests felt cold - even after the notebooks had been powered on for substantial amounts of time.

I'm certain that the said magazine also noted that a DreamColor IPS panel is as good as it gets on a notebook...*any* notebook.

I've lived with the original T43p before and its first BIOS/EC combo which made the fan noisy as hell, but I tolerated it because it was a spectacular machine overall. The same applies to the 8740W that I should be picking up shortly...

Having been around long enough to know that there's no such thing as a perfect laptop, I'm making the compromises that feel less painful than others for myself...not saying that anyone else should or should not follow the same path...

That sounds ideal actually. One of the many reasons I use mainly desktops is that I hate warm palmrests. I think HP should call this the "Dream Palmrest".

I love the Elitebooks too, the screens have been the best since the 16:10 format became the standard. The brightview is nice but I prefer the WVA (wide viewing angle), which is HPs version of flexview. The dreamcolor is even better, but also a very costly upgrade. My favorite model is the 8710w, it's the closest to a thinkpad and had a traditional keyboard with real keys. I also have an 8740w, but I dislike any of the chicklet style keyboards, the flat rubber keys just don't give me the same feedback that I need to be able to type by feel without watching.

My idea of an ideal notebook would be the T60/61 frankenpad, but the 8710w gives you a similar system with a larger screen for much less money. They are rather large to be considered "mobile", but they make great desktop replacements.

TuuS wrote:...but I prefer the WVA (wide viewing angle), which is HPs version of flexview.
The IBM Flexview panels were IPS. Panels, that HP call WVA in EliteBook 8740W models, can be either TN or IPS. The TN panels have typical vertical viewing angles in the range of +/-55 degrees to +/-60 degrees. The EliteBook 8740W Workstation IPS panels have typical vertical viewing angles of +/-89 degrees (DreamColor).

In the current EliteBook 8770W Workstation series, HP uses a modified nomenclature. TN panels with minimum +/-50 degrees vertical viewing angles are still called WVA. The IPS (DreamColor) panels with +/-80 degrees minimum vertical viewing angles are now called Ultra Wide Viewing Angles (UWVA) panels.
