760XD & 730T Projects up for grabs

#1 Post by dl301 » Tue Jan 07, 2014 11:45 am

Hey ThinkPadders, after many hours perusing this site, my 1st post:

I recently purchased a used W500, which re-invigorated my passion for ThinkPads.

This site has been very useful to me, and I'd like to give back to the community.

So here's the deal:

I was a ThinkPad geek "back in the day"; but need to let go of some projects:

I have a top-spec 760XD (plus 760ED) with many accessories; plus the *original* tablet 730T with many accessories that are looking for a welcoming new home. Most of it is not "museum quality", but some is (and there's some special stuff in here).

I'm resigned to the reality that I probably won't have time to resurrect these magnificent devices to working order (too many projects, too little time), and I feel this forum is the obvious place to offer them up to a new owner.

As a certified "A-type", I hoarded a lot of OEM stuff for both platforms, but have come to terms that they are just wasting away and will likely never be revived by me. I would be happy to carefully package up and ship this gear to someone who would appreciate it, but most importantly, USE it! I could go the eBay route, but honestly, it's more hassle than it's worth to me.

Seriously: I don't want to consign this magnificent technology to the eWaste stream. That would be a sin. However, I'm under time constraints to find a new owner. I don't have a lot of time to categorize / take pictures / answer detailed questions / etc.; but if you can put this gear to good use, I'll be happy to send it to you.

I'm located in Vancouver, Canada, and it would be ideal if I can find a regional home, but I can ship from Washington state (much cheaper / easier for US-based people). Overseas shipping is certainly an option, but will be expen$ive due to size/weight. Up to you...

So, make me a compelling case, and I'll take the time to package things up and forward them to you for just the cost of shipping. (If you have anything that you would like to trade that will make my (new to me) W500 better, I'd be extremely grateful, but honestly, it isn't something I'm counting on.)

Oh, and it'd be easier if it was all going to one person, but I can split it up; *particularly* if someone needs a particular part.

The bottom line is this: if I can't find someone who would welcome this gear in the next 48 hours, it'll be headed off to the eCyclers (which will break my heart a little, but hey, sometimes you just have to let go.)

I'm hoping this message will resonate with someone(s) here.

Cheers,

Dan

Welcome to the forum!

Could you double check the exact tablet model? Cause this 701T seems not to exist http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Category:7_Series :??:

That's a rare bird indeed! I'm sure a few forum members will be interested. That would include me as well, but postage across the Atlantic wouldn't be worth it (plus the chances of item getting lost in the post)...

Perhaps not as expensive as you think. I've done a lot of eBaying between Canada and the UK with bulky items (particularly motorcycle gear) and have had excellent success with Canada Post and Royal Mail -- fairly reasonable pricing and excellent reliability. Usually pretty [censored] fast too!

Feel free to google Canada Post's on-line shipping calculator to see if it is worth your while....

My bad - I'll use "gosh-darned" (or "bloody" for our UK friends) in the future. ;-)

I'd probably be down to negotiate some trade for you and your two machines... I've wanted a 760XD for some time, and a 730T is a bit out of my scope, but I might go for it. I've been buying up W500s to sell to my friends(who have moved on from HP DV7s they got as school gifts, that are falling into disrepair.) so I might have something to offer you in return, although I can't think much of what you might want... maybe a better screen, or a T9600 CPU.

You can PM me I suppose if you have an idea.

I'll defer to your expertise on what upgrades might be best suited for my W500. Just so you know, the 760XD comes with the uber-dock, specialized video adapter dongles, (I think) the restore CDs, and various other goodies.

As stated, I'm happy to drive across the line to WA state to ensure shipping is nice and affordable.

I'm glad this thread is getting some traction. I would have been bummed to chuck it all in the eWaste pile; but I gotta make room...

Cheers,

Dan

O yea. I slightly overlooked that you're in Canedur. But that 760XD sounds like I want it really bad... so I might have to see what strings I can pull to help you. Do you think you can read off the Type No. of your W500- so I can peek at exactly what yours has, that way we can get an idea of what potential upgrades you'd be looking at? Also-You have a dock for it yet?

Sure - the W500 is an 4063-HK6 running Win7Pro-64. It's only got 2x2GB RAM and I'm planning on upgrading the HDD to an SSD soon.

I picked up a "USB 2.0 Port Replicator" (0A33942) for cheap on eBay but haven't bothered hooking it up yet, as sober 2nd thought is that it probably has performance issues. I'm thinking I'll get the "Advanced Mini Dock" (2504-10U) instead (about $20 on eBay with free shipping).

The other items on my "possible wish list" at present are the 90W UltraSlim AC/DC adapter (41R4493 - $30 on eBay) and a Display Port > DVI cable (45J7915). I haven't really researched upgrades yet, as the laptop works great for my purposes so far, and I'm chronically short of time for researching stuff. ;-)

Suggestions are more than welcome, of course!

Again, I'm not expecting anything out of this, but if you're willing to help me upgrade the W500, I'd be happy to cover the shipping cost of the 760 goodies.

Cheers,

Dan

Seems your W500 is very nicely equipped already... not much I can help you with in the way of hardware upgrades.

That Advanced Mini Dock is absolutely amazing and a worthwhile accessory. I suppose if you need the help, I can get one, put a video card in it for you and do some testing with W500s of my own to make sure it works, and then mail it to you all in one. I can also check to see if I have any DDR3 to spare(it'd obviously have to be a 4GB stick or denser), and I can put that in a baggie with the package.

Dude. This thing is by far the most awesome laptop I've ever owned in forever. Some people think the second screen is really gimmicky, but it's actually extremely functional. I took it to my 3D graphics seminar where they taught us Autodesk Maya's Graph editor, and I had the actual editor window on the main screen with the 3D preview on the second screen. Everyone was absolutely staggered. It's also by far the heaviest and largest laptop in all dimensions I've ever owned. And that's saying something, my other laptop is a desktop-CPU monster Clevo D900F and I work on D900Ts.

Hey, don't worry about any W500 upgrades - as stated earlier, I'm really not looking for anything in return (I can pick up an Advanced Mini Dock on eBay for a song, and plus you're a starving student!). I might ask for W500 tech advice in the future, but I'm just happy there's someone who'll give the 760XD the attention it deserves :-)

And yeah, that W700ds is a freakin' beast! Sooooooo cool!!! #jealous

I distinctly remember the very first ThinkPad Tablet being a 701T --- I'm sure I've got an old Pen Computing Magazine issue that would verify that, or it might be mentioned in the book _ThinkPad: A Different Shade of Blue_.

If no one else wants it, I'll take it --- I've been wanting to try out PenPoint again for a while now.

It was the 700T- a sort of Tablet computer with a pen pointer device. It was originally marketed as an IBM product, but after the 700C laptop was released, the 700T was made a part of the Thinkpad line.
