SOLD: T61 Frankenpad with Flexview LCD

#1 Post by Bibin » Tue Feb 18, 2014 10:30 am

This is my baby, my T61p frankenpad. It started as a Type 2007 T60p. Now it is a T61 in that chassis.

Specifications:
T9300 Core 2 Duo Penryn CPU (with temperature sensing working just fine, no thermal error)
4GB DDR2 RAM
Nvidia Quadro MVS 140M (It has been rock-solid, running 3D stuff for long periods of time with no hiccups)
1400x1050 Flexview 15" LCD (no visible yellowing at the edges)
128GB SSD
Middleton dual-IDA, SATA II BIOS installed
Intel 6205 Wi-Fi card installed
IBM aluminum anniversary stickers for palmrest / lid
NMB keyboard in excellent condition (I can include the original Alps as well)
Has the Dock for port replication, etc

For someone who wants a 4:3 powerful ThinkPad, this is a dream choice. I want to venture into trying to shoehorn a 1400x1050 LCD into an X61 and use that, however, so I want to move on.

I am asking for $400 shipped in the US, or best offer.

This Imgur Album has pictures of the unit.

Are frankenpads not a popular item these days?

They are. But $500 is a lot of money for a laptop, even a Frankenpad. Not too much, it's just a big decision for most people, so you can't expect people to swarm over it. But patience may bring a willing buyer who's been looking for a nice Frankie to pick up. A good idea would be to give an in-depth report on where exactly the parts were sourced from(The Type No., history of use and date of the T61 you robbed the board from).

But it seems yours is a pretty solid one otherwise, with Middleton BIOS, discrete graphics, Solid State drive, excellent Wi-Fi card and a Port replicator. It'd be nice to know which dock you're including too(the 2504, 2505?)
Trying my hardest to collect Thinkpads, but college and being broke kinda gets in the way. However...
701C, 760, 770, X24, T30, G41, A31p, T43p, T60/61 Frankie, Z61p, X60 SXGA+, W700ds

and yes. I am a bit of a lunatic.

It looks like a nice machine for the price. Some people are shy about the nVidia graphics and prefer Intel and also with the recent trend of LED mods the sxga+ panels are worth significantly less. A while back a good used one was easily worth $100 and an nos screen over $200, but today I get $30 and $60 respectfully for the screens which is dirt cheap considering they are still some of the most beautiful screens ever made.

By the way, it would be nice to know if you have the 42w7649 or the newer 42w7873 board in your frankie. If the latter, it may spark some more interest, and in any case, good luck with your sale. :)

Well, I can't answer much about which board is in it, since I don't have the original chassis that went around this T61 PCB. All I can vouch for is that I've stressed the Nvidia GPU and it has had no problems, so I'm not concerned about its reliability. I have the original Type 2007 T60p motherboard, which I would have no qualms including just in case.

I'd take less than $500 if anyone has any offers.

Well, you see, they are popular. However, as you discovered, an X6x delivers the same power and capability, in a lighter package, and you also have the option of the X6 Ultrabase - in a 12" machine, instead of 14".

The FrankenPads shine at what the 12" form factor can't provide, period - the 1600x1200 and 2048x1536 panel options. The 1536p is less bright and the displays are aged now. I'm torn here between the two options, each has its strong points. I'm gathering parts for my very own T60 15" FrankenPad, but I still need to find a source for spare 15" 4:3 palmrests that do not cost as much as a whole T60 for parts from eBay. I would buy some if the $60 USPS shipping didn't double the price of those.

Sort of. However, the X6x provides a slower CPU, no substantial graphical acceleration, and a substantially lower resolution panel. That is suitable for me with what I am doing right now, but the difference is somewhat substantial depending on what a user is doing with the computer.

I keep forgetting this, I don't use it because I'm not using Windows.

If you don't need the highest resolution panels, a 14" machine is more portable.

True, but then we've sacrificed one of the best qualities of both the modified T61 and X6x series, the high quality IPS panels. I don't plan on owning a TN panel based laptop, so that pushes out a lot of options.

I am looking at the X220 IPS now; I had one before but a few quirks were irritating and I went back to the T61p hybrid. I think I know how to indirectly solve those problems now, though, so I am looking to give that another go.
