I have a limited budget but I'd like a small portable test machine for Linux. I'm curious as to the current prices for the X230, or the X220, with IPS and UBS 3.0. The important part is I'm happy to live with dents, dings, and scratches as long as she still works. I honestly don't really care about the warranty. I'm not an eBay fan, so besides here, where might one look? I've been watching the northeastern Ohio CL for the past months and the pricing is incredibly unimpressive. Similarly, the Outlet pricing on the X230 seems high, but I understand, since the X240 has a host of user problems. What should I expect to be paying for one of these machines?

X220 w/ IPS and usb 3.0 are going to be tough to get since only the i7 mschines had USB 3.0. All x230 have it though. You can upgrade any x220 or x230 to ips for about $70 or get an expresscard for la few bucks. Worth it though. The dock has esata though on the newer models if that's an option for you.

That said, i picked up an awesome i5 x220 non-ips for under $400 delivered off ebay. 8gb ram and 128gb ssd. Nice. Lots of x220 coming off lease, some even with damage. :-)

You'd probably help your cause if you defined limited more concretely.

Only the i7 X220 have USB 3.0.

That's the kind of deal I'm after. I just don't do eBay. Still, hope springs eternal.

Managed to scrape together some extra cash to add to this.

At this point I'm leaning heavily towards the X230 IPS. Now I just have to find one.
