WTB/LF: 770 caddy, 755CE charger.

Hello everyone!
I have gotten a non working 770 and bios booting 770x project this weekend.
It needs a caddy for further testing, the connector is funky.
Same with the 755CE, it's power plug is interesting. I couldn't just open it up and switch out the internal power jack...
Taking a chance with an HK 4 pin add on plug, hopefully no sparks.

I seen what I asked for on eBay, but I figure I'd ask the TPF enthusiasts first.
Also any information about the glorious 5:4 1280x1024 770 will be greatly appreciated, I read it on this site but I am unsure if the 770x I have has it. It is considerably taller when opening up the lid compared to the dead 770.

The odd one is if there is a floppy cable for the 701C. Found the cable.
I have gotten an external floppy drive from a 365XD, it's cable is detachable and it wouldn't fit in the 701C. Slightly different length but a similar form... compatable?
701C dropped from storage, it is now stuck at boot up screen of Win95!
Turns out the 701C decided to boot fine after I bought a floppy...

The 701C can use a USB floppy drive, if a cable cannot be found.

Edit: apologies, it can NOT use any USB item.

The 701C has no usb port and cannot have one added since it predates cardbus (pci). The 701C floppy cable is unique. It is not shared with any other Thinkpad that I know of although the external box is the same as the one used with many other models...365, 560, etc. The 755CE uses the 4-pin AC adapter in common with the 360, 760, and 765 series. I may have an extra one of those I will check my stock. I actually got the last 701C floppy cable I was able to procure from Bill Morrow but I think he told me it was his last one.

Hmmmmm... well I wouldn't want to scrounge the 701C cable if it is that rare, but if you do find a 755CE plug lemme know!

Am I correct that the main reason you need the floppy drive is to install win9x?

If so, there is a much better/cheaper/easier way, get the CDrom version and copy the "win95" folder form the disc onto the harddrive (obviously while installed on another system). Copy the system files onto the harddrive so it will boot to a command prompt. This can be done using the dos command "sys"

Example, if your drive is installed in a computer as C: and you boot from the A: drive with a win95 startup disc just type from A:\ the command "sys c:" and when you install the drive in your laptop it will boot to a C:\ prompt without loading any drivers or OS. You can then run "CD win95" (change directory to win95) and you'll be at C:\win95\

Now just type "setup" and press the enter key and you will install win95 about ten times faster than from a CDrom and about 1000 times faster than from floppies.


ps. if I totally missed the point for needing the floppy drive, then I'm sorry for wasting your time lol but maybe someone will find this useful.

pps. I had promised someone a copy of one of these old cdrom setup discs but I can't remember who, nor have I been able to find my decades old stash of setup discs but if you need one I'll see what I can do.

Yup. I have a Win95 setup CD, so I can bypass the floppy then.

Just did a quick eBay search and see that parts for the SXGA versions of 770X and 770Z are getting a bit rare. The SXGA models I think were never available for the 770/E/ED, only the 770X and 770Z: the 2MB VRAM in the plain vanilla 770 won't drive the SXGA screens at full resolution. The 770X/Z shipped in two configs: 4MB/XGA and 8MB/SXGA. Even with the 8MB VRAM in the correct models, the released drivers only support 16-bit color instead of 24-bit/true color when driving the SXGA at full resolution.

When searching on eBay or elsewhere for correct parts, you can use last three characters of the model number (7AU, 7BU, 8AU, 8BU) to specify the 8MB/SXGA models in the 770X/Z series. Screens are identical and swappable between 770X and 770Z:

770X:
9549-7AU
9549-7BU

770Z:
9549-8AU
9549-8BU

Awesome!
It seems the 770X I got has matching numbers to be an SXGA+ screen. When I measured it, I wasn't sure if I measured 13.7 inches, I didn't have a long enough ruler.

I'll hawk for those machine type numbers now.
