Hi,

So the bad thing about my T42 is that it has an XGA screen ;_; but for $45 and a fully working machine, what do you expect? Currently it has 1.7GHz, 40GB HD, 1024x768 res, 2x512mb for 1GB RAM, it's in mint condition. Battery is green, seems to last for an hour or so. ATI RADEON 7500 32mb gfx. I like it a lot except for the screen. Willing to trade + pay extra for a T42 with SXGA. I found a 2373-8ZU on eBay for cheap but it has a fan error... would it be worth it to buy that and attempt to fix the fan error then throw in my HD?

I would say yes. The beauty of a Thinkpad is the ease of access to the system board/fan and the ruggedness so it is hard to mess it up. A fan replacement is a piece of cake and you can get the part for a few bucks.

And it may even be simpler than that....remove keyboard and clean out any dust/debris that's lodged in the fan. You might get lucky and find the fan error go away!

Good luck! :D

On the other side of the coin, you might end up with a machine that has a motherboard problem and given that it's T42 that we're discussing I'd rate the chances of that happening as quite high...

Not sure I want to take the risk, though I do have a fully working T42 and could swap out the fan/motherboard.

Darn it, that machine sold!

Snagged an SXGA with cable and inverter for $30. I'll do it myself.
