WTB: dumb-but-pretty 15" 4:3 T60 for Frankenbody...

#1 Post by tEd:P » Thu Aug 14, 2014 8:02 pm

Edited 8/25 due to shockingly clean/intact auction score
...and I'm sure I'm not the only one, but considering just.how.much.hate I've got for eBay right now*, I have to at least ask here if only for my own mental health.

I'm seeking, as the title states, a 15" 4:3 T60/p for which physical cosmetics are the top priority (along with, of course, the structural health they imply). I don't really care about its relative hardware specs or even display or keyboard flaws as I already have the parts for ultimate upgrades in those areas: Indeed, their pedigree is what obligates me to find the wishfully-mintiest shell for them possible.

A complete machine would keep me from overlooking fiddly/minor/vital parts, a low-specced one would cost me less for hardware I'm ultimately replacing anyway, and a mainboard or display burnout gently exiled to storage would be ideal, but I'm not actually holding my breath or insisting on any of these conditions: If you have any configuration of this size/shape T60 at any level of in/operability whose shell is in A- or better shape I'd love to see some (well lit, in focus) pictures of it.

I expect to grab something... tolerable off eBay for test builds in the meantime, but I'll almost certainly still be in the market for more distinguished specimens (retiring Desk Queens, forgotten warehouse treasures etc.) for the next couple years... Just keep me in mind, if you would.
8/25/14- What has arrived turns out to be Rather More Than Tolerable; indeed it would be fair to question how significantly one might hope to improve upon it with anything that wasn't NOS. So what this thread is still seeking narrows down to the more long-term long-shot: In light of what is already sitting on my table, "A- or better shape" means that (for this build, anyway) I'm only interested in units whose shells are showing shelf wear or less... otherwise I don't want to waste anyone's time.

*not just the careless, unwashed mouthbreathers who have no idea what they're selling and don't notice how damaged it is, but even moreso the criminally lazy, unprofessional resellers who can't even be bothered (and resent suggestions) to take decent pictures of their machines and make sure those match their own listings and descriptions. I'm starting to feel almost religiously offended, in a distinctly Inquisitorial sort of way, that viable Frankenpad parts may well be passing through such ignorant, irreverent, unworthy hands...

I have a 14.1" T60 (2007-4EU) in good shape -- any interest?

I have a T60 15" (4:3) laptop that I can sell. Works and is completely functional as is. The only missing parts are the HDD, HDD caddie and cover, battery, A/C Adapter. Type 2623-D3U

No physical damage anywhere, palm rest is real clean and would not need replacing (IMO). Rough specs are (even though this will change):

T2500 Intel Processor
2 GB RAM
CDRW/DVD
SXGA+ screen, in good shape (a few finger print smudges though)

And

I have a 2nd T60 15" (4:3) I can part with. Type 1953-DAU.

Only damage this one has is a whole of some sort on the bottom side. It's as if someone (not me) used force to get this de-attached from a docking station or something, and ripped a whole all the way through the bottom panel in the process. Oblong in shape with some sharp edges. I can get you pictures of this.

This one already has a T61 (4:3) style MB in it with 4 GB of ram and was my daily used TP. Screen on it is XGA that is starting to darken. I believe the BIOS screen reveals the type/serial still of the T61 motherboard I put in it.

Neither of these would come with a hard drive, and even better if you don't need any batteries and/or A/C adapters
:-)

Let me know if you are interested

Certainly I plan to upgrade with my own HDD and don't mind doing the same for power accessories. And as originally stated, machine specs don't matter much to me so long as the general surrounding infrastructure is complete enough to support the mainboard/CPU/RAM/LCD upgrades already sitting on my table. Palmrests appear to be feasibly replaceable: The unavoidable and obvious damage-magnet (for which I've yet to see a NOS part) appears to be the rubberized LCD cover. I recently noticed minor scars here even on my uber-pampered desk queen of a T43P...

I actually have a possibly-promising 2623-D3U on its way to me right now; in a couple days I'll get to see firsthand whether the seller's marginal photography was hiding wear to the shell or exaggerating it. (if you can't take pictures WELL LIT and IN FOCUS then why are you even listing used consumer electronics online, especially as a business?) But for $55 shipped it seemed a decent gamble if only to end up with a resellable testing machine at worst.

So, again, I'm not in any hurry here, and my interest in T60s of any 15" 4:3 configuration will be proportional to their absolute lack of chips/cracks around the corners/edges, and their relative lack of scratches/corner balding on the LCD cover (essentially nothing that leaps out at you viewing it head-on or is detectable to the touch). At this point I expect I'll have to parts-swap a few machines together to get the looks I want (and I do have hardware for 2 builds), so if, for example EZ-Wind's T60s look promising in this respect, I'd love to see some pictures of them. Do I assume correctly that my email @ddress shows in my profile? Even the one with the hole in the bottom could be interesting if its LCD cover is nice enough...

So. Uh. Yeah: If you're willing to carefully structure a Saved Search, grind through a couple hundred mostly-crappy and frequently-inaccurate/irrelevant listings at first and then stay on top of the 10-20 newly added ones each day thereafter for a couple weeks while harassing the sellers of likely candidates for better pictures and more detail it is still actually possible to do something like panning for gold. Of course, whether this process is remotely time- or cost-effective is another question entirely.
