WTB: 10" Tablet and Desktop for my Grandparents

#1 Post by wackyD » Sun Aug 31, 2014 7:32 pm

Hello all,

Before I hit ebay or Newegg, I wanted to hit up the group to see what folks might have lying around.

My grandfather is not very computer literate, but likes to browse craigslist and see pictures of my daughter.

I thought about one of the Lenovo S6000 tablets on the outlet for under $150, but thought I would see what is here.

They also have a desktop (in addition to a T60) that needs replacement. I had tossed together a Dell E510 from the office parts bin, but it has developed a power issue (constant orange flashing power light) and my grandmother prefers to buy something new, since having not bought one in ten years, now seems like a fine time.

They are currently on XP, but I would hope to only jump up to Win 7. I do have a Win 7 license available and could move over the SATA 3.5 drive and DDR2 ram if that made sense.

I would like to get a low end CORE i3/5/7, but would certainly talk about something in the later Core 2 Duo or Quad or their offshoots.

Thinking under or well under $200.

EDIT: Found an HP 8200 Elite with a Core i5 for $75. Good start for Win 7 and the desktop.

Thanks!!!!

Kind regards,

Daniel

I know this is a Lenovo forum but I highly recommend the Dell Venue line of tablets.

The iPad 2 would be the best. It even supports the iOS 8 upgrade! It's not hard to find one for under $200 shipped on eBay.

This is a Thinkpad forum, not Lenovo forum. In fact, many people here aren't that fond of Lenovo.
Microsoft Surface 3 (Atom x7-Z8700 / 4GB / 128GB / LTE)
Dell OptiPlex 9010 SFF (Core i3-3220 / 8GB / 8TB); HP 8300 Elite minitower (Core i7-3770 / 16GB / 9.25TB)
Acer T272HUL; Crossover 404K; Dell 3008WFP, U2715H, U2711, P2416D; Monoprice 10734; QNIX QHD2410R; Seiki Pro SM40UNP

iOS 8 on an iPad2 kills it's performance. I have read quite a few reports indicating this. Better to stick with iOS7. An iPad 3 or 4 would be a far better choice if you really think they will need the features in iOS 8. It would also be officially supported by Apple longer.

If you aren't set on Apple but want a quality tablet, the Nexus 10, Samsung Galaxy 10, or Sony Experia are excellent tablets and will run the heck out of criagslist, facebook and a photoviewer.
New:
Thinkpad T430s 8GB DDR3, 1600x900, 128GB + 250GB SSD's, etc.

ThinkPad Tablet 16GB 1838-22U

Okay, I just did a Google search and see what you mean. Here's one of the top hits: http://arstechnica.com/apple/2014/09/a- ... he-ipad-2/ . The OP's grandfather might not mind though.

For browsing Craigslist and viewing photos, I don't think Apple support would be necessary. Warranty would be more relevant since there are more iPad 3's and 4's that still have it, though these would of course cost much more than the iPad 2. The OP's budget is $200 at most.

I recommended the iPad 2 mainly because the iOS is more user-friendly than Android for someone who "is not very computer literate". Reliability is another reason: based on my own experience and what I've read, Android is less stable. When the user isn't computer literate, reliability matters a lot more than for you or me.

BTW, I just noticed that Newegg had refurbished iPad 2 for $184.99 shipped this morning, though it sold out almost instantly: http://www.neweggflash.com/product/9SIA ... id=2890900 .
