Found! - Thinkpad 560Z

#1 Post by Norway Pad » Thu Oct 02, 2014 1:50 am

Hello

I am currently looking for a Thinkpad 560Z. I have been wanting to have one of these small Thinkpads for a while, but I really haven't found any. So I put out an ad on the Norwegian equivalent of Craigslist, to see what I could find there. So far I have only been offered Ideapad 560s, and what from the description appears to be two 560s, but with a hefty price tag. Don't know more about them, as the seller is slow to respond, and pictures are hard to send, apparently. So I would like to see what might be for sale here before I pursue this further. I have always been happy with the Thinkpads I have purchased here, even if shipping costs to Norway comes in addition.

My specifications are few, but important:

It needs to have the PII processor and USB port. I think only the 560Z meets those demands, as the 560X has USB, but PII MMX processor. I might be wrong.. Anyway, the key is to be able to swap in a 400MHz PII MMC module, in which case I can run Antix on it and actually enjoy using the 560 for small tasks.

Overall condition need to be 6-7-8 out of 10. The better shape the better, but this will in the end be a question of price. In general, I'm ok with some shine on keys and palmrest, and some minor scratches, but no cracks in lid/housing, and no deep scuffs, keys missing, parts broken off, etc. It should preferably come with a hard drive and the battery should be present even if it isn't functional.

Reply here or on PM, if preferred. Also note that I am only looking to buy at the moment. Thank you for any offers!

My .sig and inventory control system (i.e., Word documents) says I have one but I'm not sure where it is at the moment. If you can give me a few days, I'll look around the closet. I pretty sure I got it as an EDO memory module testbed. It's listed as a 2640-B1U having a 300Mhz processor. According to the tabook of those days, it's indeed a Pentium II and has one USB port. No idea what physical condition it's in but notes says I bought it January 2008 and it came with a dead CMOS battery but all of the built-in tests came back okay (except for HD as it doesn't have one). As I haven't had the need to test any EDO modules recently, I'd consider letting it go to a good home where it may be useful again.

Sounds good! It will definitely find a good home, if you are comfortable shipping internationally.

First hand, a quick feedback on the general state and a price estimate would be great. The one 560Z I have found in Norway so far seems to be worth an arm and a leg, and the seller is hard to communicate with, no pics etc, so I might chose to not pursue that any further. I know more during this weekend.

Good!

Ray: Responding to your email right now.

DaKKS: Feel free to check out what you might have available, if it's not too much work. In case one option doesn't work out, it's good to have another option.

ok, now i remember the 560 series.. but still not a 560 "Z"..

great age does really nasty thngs to memory..
the refresh takes minutes to hours rather than microseconds..
oh, well..

sorry for my confusion..
those 560 models preceeded the 570 series..
on a 560 you had to take the machine apart to swap the hard drive as i recall and it opened by pressing in on a button on the front edge..

i don't think i ever had more than one..

now back to staring blankly at the wall..

My apologies, it was a 560 (2640-T95).

Good choice. After I had already collected about 40 different Thinkpads, I had a short list of models that I still wanted to get and the 560Z was one of them. But have you considered the 240X? It is even smaller (10.4") and lighter (2.9 lbs), yet faster, with up to 500MHz Pentium III and 192MB of PC100 RAM, or 256MB if you disable the onboard RAM.

Dell OptiPlex 9010 SFF (Core i3-3220 / 8GB / 8TB); HP 8300 Elite minitower (Core i7-3770 / 16GB / 9.25TB)
Acer T272HUL; Crossover 404K; Dell 3008WFP, U2715H, U2711, P2416D; Monoprice 10734; QNIX QHD2410R; Seiki Pro SM40UNP

Oh, don't get me started.

Yes, I have indeed been looking at the 240. I have an IdeaPad S-10 that I used for short and light traveling, but after XP EOL I never put another OS on it, and just stopped using it. So I imagine having a proper IBM Thinkpad, a 240X or Z, for that purpose. Linux Antix would probably fly on a PIII platform. So it is probably only a matter of time before I try to buy one of those too.

That's ok. Thank you anyway for checking it out. :)

No longer looking, bought a 560Z from a forum member. Still looking for Hard Drive cover for it.
