marketing and engineering clearly aren't using the same nomenclature.   i only deal with engineers and therefore use their terminology.   if the current PSREFs and UGs say it's an "adaptive row plus 5-row" layout (and we aren't allowed to use basic 1 + 5 = 6 math) then i'll throw my arms up in defeat.

i'm exhausted from this discussion.   seriously.

The New X1 Carbons that come with Windows 7 Professional have Windows 7 installed through downgrade rights from Windows 8.1. So it might be that your computer will come with Windows 8.1 recovery discs.

no recovery discs at all..
there is a utility that will write some sort of replacement for the installed OS..
this X1 has a license for win 7.. nothing more..

typing on it just now..

the fact that the keys have been moved around is less of a bother for me since am NOT now and never have been a touch typist..

the loss of the mouse keys makes things even worse for touch typists.. and for me too since I have an arthritic pair of thumbs..
reaching further for the left mouse key hurts..!

other than these glaring issues, this X1 is a really slick thinkpad..

amazing nice display..
smooth finish that is not the soft thinkpad paint but something else, something that looks to be hardy and strong and resistant to sharp things..
right this minute this X1 is the child of a long line of thinkpads.. a worthy place to stick a thinkpad logo..

just too bad about the keyboard issues..

@pianowizard..
I can't speak about the 1600x900 display other than to think it would just be another overly wide and shallow display..
this touch IPS display is as good as any IPS thinkpad display I have seen..
I especially worked hard NOT to get one of those 1600X900 displays..

I got this X1 carbon from the outlet and its a new thinkpad with warranty until 2017 + my amex guaranteed of anoter year on top of that..

(typing on these chicklets is sure no better than a normal keyboard and maybe worse..
