A while ago I posted an X61 with a Penryn CPU, 4GB RAM, and a nice SXGA+ LCD, a top notch machine. Today I checked on it, and it's developed a few vertical lines on the display:



This is really upsetting, I'm probably not going to get around to fixing this. Other than the LCD itself being damaged, the machine is great for the mod - the BIOS mod has been performed, the LCD ribbon is modified to plug in upside down, the computer is in good shape... just the LCD is damaged.

PM me if you are interested. Maybe like $180 or so? It's not a very typical motherboard. If nobody is interested maybe I will just put a stock screen in and sell the machine.

Bump - does nobody want a nearly-working X61 these days? These used to be such favorite project machines! I may have to just replace its screen and sell it stock.

What would you take for getting a new SXGA+ screen in it?

It's funny you ask - I just found one and have it on the way to replace. I will post with updates as I fix the X61 up.

I'd sell the bad screen for $20. If someone has the tools to re-connect a TAB cable bond then it can probably be fixed without any issues. The lines got worse in the one region, they are basically solid black. If I press with my finger at the right angle on the ribbon connection, they come back without issues.




I might re-use my cable, we'll see. While I did modify the cable, it turns out I didn't need to - I did the cable modification by soldering a connector where the original X61 one was, and making the appropriate pinout changes too. The X61 vs SXGA+ display pinout is not just flipped as it is on the X4x and X3x, but actually a fairly different pinout.

The replacement LCD has arrived, hopefully I can get it installed really soon.

The LCD has been replaced, the laptop is in great shape once more.
