Feeler: 15" Flexview Frankenpad, Modded and Maxed

#1 Post by bmwman91 » Wed Dec 31, 2014 9:22 pm

I am moving on to a W530 since I need a lot more computing power for some CAD and MatLab applications, so I am thinking of selling my trusty Frankenpad. This is a feeler to see if anyone is intersted, and at what price level.

The machine has a T61p motherboard with Nvidia NVS 140M graphics. The board was purchased from forum member TuuS a few years back and while the date code is pre-8/8 it has been going strong under all sorts of GPU-intensive workloads. So, it appears to have an OK GPU in it.

The CPU is an X9000 Core 2 Extreme chip, which I have been running undervolted which has definitely helped it to run about as cool as the T7600 that I used to have in it.

I did a lot of work to optimize the heat sink / fan assembly. Details can be found in this thread, along with benchmarks and other details of my Frankenpad build.

The motherboard has the Middleton BIOS installed, which has allowed 8GB of RAM, SATA-II speeds and a 5300 Ultimate N WiFi card.

The keyboard was replaced with a fresh one about a year ago and it is everything a classic Thinkpad keyboard should be...precise and crisp. I will miss it when my W530 comes.

Additionally, I will provide a full stand-alone, legal copy of Win 7 Ultimate or Win 8.1 Pro in its original retail packaging with the laptop. Your choice there. I like Win 8.1 myself, but there seems to be a BSoD issue once a month or so related to the Trackpoint, and I do not recall that being an issue in Win 7. So you might want Win 7 just to avoid the possibility of a BSoD. The laptop will be completely wiped when it is sold, so OS installation will be up to the buyer.

Other than that, the laptop will come with 2 90W AC adapters, an Advanced Dock II (lots of ports, not the one that holds a GPU though), and an Ultrabay adapter with a 750GB WD Scorpio Black HDD.

The screen is in 8/10 condition due to a couple dark/dust spots in the IPS panel. This has been a known, infamous issue. HOWEVER, I also happen to have NOS LED backlit IPS panels that I never got around to having modified for this. So, I will also include a nice new LED panel, along with an RBS-approved inverter and LCD cable (Bluetooth version). You will have everything you need to convert this laptop to use one of the nice new LED backlit IPS panels, it just needs to be sent off to RBS for modifications.

If folks are interested in buying this, I will work on getting some photos. The inside is 9/10 clean, and the top of the lid is 7/10 with a little scuffing and wear-through of the rubberized coating on the outside edges. The magnesium frame is 100% intact and there is no broken part over by the left hinge, which has been sort of a common issue.

My $0.02...

Get the LED mod done and sell the machine afterwards.

People willing to spend serious money on hi-end FrankenPads will not tolerate screen imperfections of the current panel and/or be willing to do the LED conversion themselves.

They want a finished product.

Good luck.
