400 nits outdoor X201 tablet Toshiba PVA screen $120 and $100, non tablet Hydis AFFS/IPS screen $70

A while ago I gave my X201 tablet a screen surgery to get the great 400 nits screen. LT121EE08000 are very hard to find. I had been warned by other modders that used screens were sold as "new" on ebay, and unfortunately it's true. Now I have first hand experience with that :( A LT121EE08000 selling on ebay for less than $100 is a really bad idea.

You must get a batch, or a new LT121EE08000 sells for $300 apiece and that's way too expansive. So I got a batch. I feared something would go wrong, and thought I might as well have some spares! I ended up not needing them, as everything just worked out perfectly. Now it's spring cleaning time so I'm selling the spare screens and my guinea pig X201 tablet (to be listed separately when I get some RAM)

The screens for sale are:

- a Hydis HX121WX1 AFFS/IPS screen for $70

It was removed from the guinea pig X201 tablet. Initially purchased with a broken screen shield (just the front plastic, not the screen itself) I suppose it's perfect for a non tablet X201 or X200 as it doesn't have the tablet plastic shield in the front, which is extremely hard to remove. I tested the Hydis and it works perfectly. There is no mark or scratch, as the front shield protected it quite well. The Hydis HX121WX1 is the AFFS/IPS with a LCD backlight rated at 200 nits. I don't know the exact difference between AFFS and IPS, on http://forum.notebookreview.com/threads ... ps.606395/ they say it's the same. The important thing is that it's not the TN version as shown on http://www.yourepeat.com/watch/?v=PzP3rFZXSgE

Instead, it has a nice viewing angle as shown on https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q4hVYq9glKg

- a brand new Toshiba LT121EE08000 PVA screen for a X200 tablet / X201 tablet for $120

It's new, with very deep blacks when used inside. The blacks are so deep they put my expensive desktop screen to shame! It was sold as an outdoor 400 nits screen but I measured it with a luminance meter to be as bright as a mid 2012 macbook pro 15, which reportedly has a 300 nits screen (the result is in FC units which I don't know how to translate to nits but it gives the same reading). Even with the same luminance number, it is much more readable that the macbook pro when used outdoors, even in direct sunlight on an extremely bright winter day with snow! It might be due to the special front plastic shield.

- another brand new Toshiba LT121EE08000 PVA screen for a X200 tablet / X201 tablet with a defect for $100

It's new too, same as above, but there is a defect: a drop of liquid somehow got between the front shield and the actual screen (!!) I suppose you could live with that, or remove the front shield and use it on a X201 non tablet. I don't want to spend several hours removing the front shield, so it's sold at a reduced price.

Anyway, I can only recommend the Toshiba LT121EE08000 PVA screens. I'm using one on my X201 tablet, after using the LT121EE08000.icc calibration profile, I can say it's the best screen I ever used -- and I had a few laptops, including macs!

Shipping is $10 by USPS, or you send me a shipping label, or you pay for the real shipping costs. I won't ship abroad because it's a hassle. No shipping fees if you can come to Fairfax, VA!

I can post a picture of the back if anyone wants to check the details. I just can't get the drop to show on a picture. It's like a 1 inch circle at the edge of the screen, visible when the screen is turned off.

A very important info is missing: the resolution of 1280x800.
Lovely day for a Guinness! (The Real Black Stuff)

Yes, it's 1280x800 as it's impossible to get SXGA+ IPS screens at 400 nits on the X201. Sorry if that wasn't clear.

Oh and about resolution vs brightness, I did a 1400x1050 screen swap on a X60 tablet a few days ago. It does look better, text is "more velvety", but the backlight is not good enough compared to the 400 nits Toshiba. It's a great screen, but only good inside.

I'll try to get a high resolution screen (like 1600x1200) in my T51 to see if being "ultra velvety" makes up for the brightness and makes me change my mind, but so far I insist: the LT121EE08000 is the best screen ever :-)
