Feeler / WTB: Which higher PC3 SODIMMs would work for 17" MBP that uses DDR3 PC3-8500?

I was looking to help a friend upgrade some things on his MBP 17" from Mid 2010 - Core i5. Looking at Crucials Memory match option the following came up.

I've noticed that higher clocked ram has been reverse compatible with some previous ones for Thinkpads.

Which ones would/ could work here? And I might consider buying a used pair.

I've got 2 x 8 GB 1333MHZ Mac sodimms, but it looks like that model maxes out at 8 GB, which is kinda perverse.

Could it accept the single chip and run the 8G?
