Hi,

I'm looking for a 600X or 600E, preferably with a battery that holds a charge. Thanks!

Got a 600E 2645-4AU fully working with a good battery. PM me if interested. I just picked it up. Decent, not great physical condition.

I have been looking around for a 600X for a while, just to see how the availability is, and there is at least 3 US ones on eBay now. For my own part I'm holding off the 600X until I can get my hands on one of the native speedstep units, but all the current ones offered on eBay seem like decent units. I think some of them comes without HDD and memory, though.

But make sure to check out hwattys' offer before you go the eBay route. I usually prefer to do business here if possible, and encourage others to do the same.

Yeah, I agree a speedstep model would be amazing. The build quality and portability of the 600 series is peerless. What I wouldn't do to go back in time to buy a fully spec'd 600X.

if you want something equally as rare, find a PII 400MHz MMC-1 module for your original 600.   PMF40002001AA is the part number.   this plus a quick hard drive will really wake it up.

i gave up looking for a 600X after upgrading my 600.

I believe that the 600 would be limited to a maximum of 416MB (32+256+128), while a 600X can be pushed to 576MB (64+256+256).

ray - you're correct.   i have 32+256+256 in my 600 and could only get 416 usable even with onboard memory disabled in BIOS.

the extra 160MB may or may not matter depending on the choice of OS or applications.   it's not like 576 is a massive amount in its own right.

I tried to source a 400MHz module for my 600, but they seemed rare and expensive, so I went with PMF36602001AA, the 366MHz one. I also added a 7200 drive, and maxed out the RAM, so I'll second that the suggestions given by Erik (minus 34MHz) does wonders for the base 600. With Linux Antix, the 600 is actually very usable for daily tasks like browsing and word processing. I have never seen more RAM than 250-300MB RAM utilized, so 416 vs. 576 MB isn't any big deal here.

For my part a 600X Speedstep would probably be a pure collectible, while the 600 sees regular use around the house.

Thanks for the input. I like this upgrade the 600 idea. There's the p2 366 one easily available on ebay: link. And if it a 600X appears great.

I'll definitely check out Linux Antix, I've been looking for a good distro for 90s era computers. Honestly I was considering just something modern but without X and just tmux my way through life.

EDIT: Just finished a deal on a pair of 600X's, so I'm set. Thanks everyone.
