Wtd: Any high-res Thinkpad, ~$200 (in Delhi-India is a plus but US/EU works). Modern enough. Woman student

Hi!

A woman who's a student here needs a Thinkpad, something modern-enough, budget ~$200.

Like ~Full HD (1920x1080) would be great, and 720p webcam & maybe HDMI/DP would be a bonus. Performance, RAM, disk space completely unimportant I guess.

This is in Delhi-India but maybe we can get it here some other way from EU/US as lots of friends come here frequently.

Please suggest! :)

Thanks! :)

I would humbly suggest either lowering the requirements or expanding the budget...

Does she need a "Thinkpad" or is this what you thinks she needs?
As "ajkula66" points out if she needs a Thinkpad you need to tell her to increase her budget.
If she needs a good modern laptop for $200 maybe she should look at some other brands which will still serve her well if she looks after the laptop.

200$ will get you a T500/W500 with 1920x1200 display. However, at 6 years I wouldn't call the T500 that modern. A T520 with FHD display is probably the most sensible option but, as has been pointed out already, you will need to increase your budget for one.

a student who moves allot would need a thin and light solution, the t500/w500 are fairly heavy.

Then perhaps you need to look at some modded thinkpads, such as the FHD X220, X230 on 51nb. But their price be far much more than $500 (plus the international postage)

Alternatively, check Sony Z13 or Z228, these are light, high-res, but again, price is nowhere near $200

The OP made it pretty clear that you need to factor that the user of the computer is a woman. Thinkpad computers are unisex design last I checked, which leaves me a little confused as to how to recommend a computer for a woman because all thinkpad computers are for women.

I agree with all the comments made so far, regarding the $200 budget, size and weight, full HD, and "modern".

If the OP is sticking with ~$200, I recommend her to look for a T420 with 14.0" 1600x900. That's not full HD but still reasonable. And it shouldn't be too hard to carry around.

Hi OP,

I live in Indonesia, South East Asia, about 7,000 km away from New Delhi, India :)

for that budget, you can get X200 tablet from here in Jakarta, Indonesia ranging from USD 190-220 (exclude shipping cost) or find a fellow thinkpadder who lives in Singapore and get an used X200 tablet or maybe X201 tablet if you expand your budget :)

Thanks for all your reflections. Agreed that Thinkpads are unisex and that a Thinkpad is more my thought than hers, however it's also always a good thing to do things right, not mentioning that real Thinkpads look great.

@Dumanda: thanks for your offer, will have a look.;

Looking through what could maybe be bought for $200, indeed some slightly older model gets to the top of the list

X301 (=13.3", 1440x900) (can't find any secondhand/refurbished!)
X201s (=12.1", 1440x900) (can't find any secondhand/refurbished!)

T60p (1400x1050 or 1680x1050or1200)
T61 or T61p (the one with 1680x1050 (WSXGA+) or 15.4" 1920x1200 (WUXGA))

These are basically Core 2 Duo laptops, which have really good specs (like ~2Ghz and RAM capacity is not an issue) but nonetheless are considered old. So,

These are very nice computers and the hassle of getting an external webcam must really be said to be worth it.

what about X200s for that price? (exclude shipping price to New Delhi)
Intel Core 2 Duo L9400 @1,87GHz
2GB DDR3 memory
120GB hdd
1440X900 resolution
No webcam
6-cell battery oem
65 watt charger

The shipping cost from Indonesia would be around USD70-80 (I'll be using EMS)

I think I can throw a 32bit Win7 from recovery on that machine
Let me know what you think about it :)

My opinion...for whatever it's worth:

Put aside a bigger budget. Shipping is going to cost you through the nose regardless of which machine you buy, and getting a newer system would pay off just in that respect. Not to mention the fact that you won't find too many sellers willing to ship to your desired location and accept an online payment method.

Good luck.

Is this laptop for an Indian woman or a Swedish woman? Human rights in India are not so good. It's the only reason I ask. The OP location says Stockholm.

I would say T410s or T420s. What currency is your $200 budget?

North India.

(I think I wouldn't call it 'human rights' but 'culture'. Rape laws are superhard though. It's in the culture to sell people though, a bank doing damage recovery instructed their collectors to "sell everything in the house including family members" in 2013.)

Omg! The budget is 20 000 INR, which is 313USD! :-O

I completely missed on the exchange rate - okay that buys more =)

There is some refurbished things on the local market, and even a hackathon with some guys with too many Thinkpads just 200 meters away.

It's for like, web chat based support and translation job, that kind of thing.
