Over the recent years I have acquired excess Bluetooth GPS Receivers. One brand turned out to be cheaper to buy a second one than to buy a battery for the first one. Anyway, I've been content with just two; number one and a back up.
If you want to try navigating using your laptop, this is a cheap way to go; pay only the cost to get them.
Here's the inventory:
1 - DeLorme Earthmate BT-20
2 - Holux G-33 [has spare battery]
3 - G-Sat BT_359 [2 units, the original & spare?]

All work and hold a charge. I've been satisfied with all of them.

I use Microsoft Streets & Trips, but there is a free program called Navigation 14 Free which isn't too bad for an open source program. It uses world wide maps which you choose for the area of interest, with good coverage in the US.
My MO has been to use the GPS while on the road because it has a much larger screen than most of the single purpose units, or cell phone, etc.; plus having the laptop when I get in the hotel for internet.
