I have a W510 with a dead display that I believe is due to a blown fuse on the motherboard. Rather than trying to locate and fix the bad fuse, I would like to replace the whole board. My W510 has the INVIDIA Quadra FX 880M and the 1920x1080 display. I'm not sure what other specs are necessary to match the motherboard. My machine's type is 4389-P2U and the serial number is R9-D6GYM. Please let me know if you have a compatible motherboard available for sale.

There are many different motherboards available.
Open the RAM door and remove the RAM modules, you should find a white label with the P/N or FRU number of that mobo.
Let us know what you find there.

BTW: a fuse costs only a few cents, a mobo many dollars!
(Fuse should be located near the LCD-cable-connector).
Since you have to take the machine completely apart anyway to replace the mobo, you'd be throwing money out the window!

I think I have the right white label, and it says:

I was thinking it would be more convenient to just swap in a new mobo. How would I figure out which fuse is bad? And I'm not confident enough in my soldering skills to actually do something that tiny. Are there any reputable places to send it in for repair? I looked around town and didn't have any luck finding someone local to repair it.

I'm on the road for job training, and I don't have any of my tools with me, so by the time I bought a digital multi-meter and a solder iron, I might be getting close to the cost of a mobo.

According to Lenovo, your machine originally came with 63Y1888 KENDO-1 WS-1 RAID=N TPM=Y SYSTEM BOARD with MFG P/N 75Y5647.
This seems to "translate" into the 63Y1547 from the HMM.
Compare mobo-pictures from eBay with your mobo, to see what matches.

After finding the culprit with a (borrowed) multimeter, you can piggyback-solder a new fuse on top of the old one.
No special skills required, just steady hands and good eyes.

Thanks for the info! What should I look for on a multimeter reading? Checking for voltage and continuity in car wiring is about as far as my multimeter skills go.

Around that LCD connector you should find probably 3 fuses, marked F1, F2 and F6 (if the same as on a W520 mobo).
All you need to measure is "continuity" (or a beep) of those fuses. If beep, it's OK.

I see a blue thing with a "P" on it that I think corresponds to a "F1" label on the board. It's near the connector. I don't see an "F2" or an "F6." I'll go pick up a multimeter tonight and check it out.

Where could I source the fuses, and how would I identify the part #?

This is outside my pretty limited electronics/computer repair comfort zone, so I appreciate your help.

What is "HMM?"

I think I've located the bad fuse. It's the blue one in the bottom center of the picture with the "P" on it marked "F1." I got a digital multimeter and it showed no continuity.

I haven't had any luck finding a source for laptop fuses, but then again, I don't really know how to identify it. Can anybody help?

Is there anything I need to do to get a new (used) motherboard to work? I just put in one that I found on ebay. When I hit the power button, the leds blink a few times and the fan powers up for a few seconds, but then the lights go back off and nothing happens.

Sorry you are having trouble.

Remove battery, AC and RAM, then hold the power button down for ca. 20 seconds.
Connect only AC and try to boot.
If the mobo is still in a working condition it should beep 1-3-3-1.

BTW, I'd probably be happy to get your 'old' W510 motherboard.

Holy cow, IT WORKS!!!!! Thank you, thank you!! I did the RAM out AC & battery out power button for 20 seconds and then put the RAM back in with the AC, and it powered right on. Even the old, original screen works. So it was the motherboard all along.

First screen was black with some stuff about invalid date and something else I didn't understand. I'm assuming that's from disconnecting the reserve battery. Now it's at the BIOS setup utility. Anything I need to do there?

Just let me know what a fair price for the old MoBo is, and I'll send it out to you. I don't have any need for it, and I really appreciate your help.

Okay, I set the date in the BIOS, and the machine booted into Windows. Now, when I reboot, it initially flashes a black screen that says:

2200: Machine Type and Serial Number are Invalid
2201: Machine UUID is invalid

After a few seconds, it proceeds to boot into Windows.

The only other problem is that the touchpad and trackpoint don't appear to work. The keyboard otherwise works fine, as does a USB mouse. I didn't have time to investigate the touchpad/trackpoint issue before I left for work. Any thoughts?

As far as the machine type/serial number/UUID issue, I'm guessing I need to update something to match the motherboard up with the operating system? What should I do?
