ThinkPad X20 (2662-31U) worked fine until a week ago, now LCD video and battery operation is funky. Video via external display works and battery can be inserted and charges after boot up from A/C adapter.
Otherwise, very good shape. Great parts machine.
Check it out.

The inverter in the LCD is blown out. You can replace it for ~$15.

Very easy to replace.
remove 3 screws on the LCD bezel, pull the bezel downward and out. Unplug the two ends of the inverter, replace inverter, put bezel, then screws back on. It'll take about 5-10 minutes.

Thanks for the tip.
Would this explain why the laptop won't power on unless plugged in - and even then, usually the battery has to be removed? Related?

i was thinking that i might have to replace
the fluorescent tube, but that was looking
a bit difficult.
i already have my x20 in pieces;
i see a part that i believe is the
inverter that people are talking about.
the part number is FRU: 08K3356.
would someone be willing to confirm
that this is the part to try replacing?
(any advice on vendors from whom to
acquire the part would be appreciated
also.)
fwiw, my screen made a pshhhh-like
hissing sound before it fell over.
is this typical for inverter failure?
thx,d

Yep, that's it.
Try ebay, and try googling the part number.
