That is actually cheap for international shipping. Shipping a laptop domestic cost almost as much if done properly. You can confirm this on usps website, enter an 8lb parcel and make sure to tick the option that it contains fragile goods and the cheapest cost you will get is about $20-30 for domestic (thanks to sharp increases early this year). You can cheat by not declaring it as fragile and ship it for less, but when it arrives broken you are S#!T out of luck because the insurance won't cover it, so I'd only consider that if you are really good at packaging and you double or triple box it. In fact I would use 4 boxes to ship a laptop that size and could do it pretty cheap, and would be glad to explain how it's done, but it would only work in the usa. Shipping a laptop that size with proper packaging to international locations would normally be $50-100 usd depending on many options.

I'll also add that many people are frankenpadding these with a T61 motherboard because many prefer the T60 lid and with the availability of discrete T61 boards with the newer gpu chips that were once thought to be only an urban myth, you can make one hell of a nice laptop out of these for a reasonable price. Most do prefer the 15" because of the flexview screens, but for those who like the 14" size they are a great laptop with a nice resolution.
