Specifying the version (Home, Pro, Ultimate, 32/64) as well as the intended recipient machine would help...

Not real picky. 32 bit Ultimate preferred, I guess. For T400.

If everything else fails, then you should be able to acquite these DVD's directly from Lenovo, using the information you'll find in --> Recovery DVD part numbers - ThinkPad R400, R500, T400, T400s, T500, W500

I have Ultimate x64 without SP1 and Pro x86/x64 in SP1 and pre-SP1 flavors as well as T400 software/drivers in x64 and x86 flavors. I can host .isos or burn and mail you a copy of any combination of these... Let me know if you have interest.

How much RAM is in your T400, or how much do you plan on having in there? If 4 gigs or more you will want to consider a 64bit version of Windows

Thanks for the reply. I have more than one laptop, some with 2gb, some with 3gb. I had considered the 64 bit, but decided on the 32 bit. It's my understanding that the advantage of 64 bit is that it will handle having multiple programs/windows running at the same time better than 32 bit. That's not likely to be an issue with me.

A much more important advantage of 64-bit is that it can handle more than 3 GB of memory.

When I run across 32-bit machines today (rare, actually), they are slugs. Too slow for most people.

No longer looking for discs. My Lenovo discs arrived and booted and installed beautifully. Then they asked for a product key number. Was hoping they wouldn't do that. :(

If you had obtained a genuine Lenovo factory T400 recovery disk set, they should not have asked for any product key.

They were genuine, I copied them from original factory recovery media I have in my collection.

I imagine his T400 which was preloaded with Vista doesn't have the W7 SLIC code in BIOS. I used this set of discs on my T400 which was stickered for 7 and it did activate.

That said - you shouldn't have much trouble locating a BIOS mod which will eliminate the WiFi whitelist and update the BIOS for SLIC2.1 which will activate Windows 7 for you.

Huh? All I understand of that is that I need to do something to my bios. Looks like I'm gonna be doing some googling.

Vista needs Slic2.0 in BIOS to activate, W7 needs Slic2.1 to activate both Vista and W7.
Here's a good one: http://mcdojf.wix.com/t400

Thanks for the post and the link. I have three T400s and one T61. The first T400 installed W7 beautifully, but wanted a product key. I tried the second T400 and W7 installed beautifully and did not want a product key. I'll try the third one and the T61 later. I went to the link provided and downloaded a bios updater for the T400s and modified bios, but at this point , just don't have the knowledge or skill set to do anything with them. But, I'll continue to plug away. Thanks for the pointers.

I have windows seven pro 64 disc set if you're interested, but I think from what you are saying and your laptops not having a lot of ram you should probably consider Vista which I sell for only $20 with COA. Once fully updated it's very similar to Seven and is extremely stable and you can have your choice of 32 or 64 bit versions. I've provided these to dozens of forum members and everyone loves them, already having service pack 2 integrated it's just as stable as Seven and a fraction of the cost.

Thanks for the post and the comments. I think I got that package from you a couple years ago. The COA is on the desk in front of me as I type. The disc has somehow manged to get away from me. I've looked for it a couple times. I liked Vista well enough. Recently I switched out the laptop in my brothers garage with a T400. He uses the laptop to play Pandora. This is when I discovered there was some kind of conflict with Flash player/Firefox/Vista. I don't use my laptops much- I keep one in my van and one in my car, just for convenience. Anyway, this conflict is what got me started on changing to Win 7. At this point, I think things are kinda ironed out. Thanks again for helping me out a couple years ago. That was for my T61, which I think was my first Thinkpad/PC. And thanks for the offer today.
