FOR SALE: IBM CL57 (8554) - Parts or Whole
Posted: Wed Jan 04, 2017 9:26 am
I have an IBM PS/2 CL57sx (8554) - First color laptop - 1992 that needs a new home.
It is a 20Mhz 386, 80MB HD, 10MB Ram, includes modem card
I have had a lot of fun with this, running both Win 3.11 and Windows 95 - but it is now strapped with the dreaded Keyboard 00301 keyboard error (apparently these models are prone to this over time), and it rarely gets past this. When it does, (again, rare) it seems to run just fine.
I think this would be good for someone who may want the parts, or want to try their hand at repairing the keyboard.
Now the warts:
The 2 batteries(original) of course no longer hold a charge.
The rubbery coating on the thing (the only way I know how to describe it) peels pretty bad. Don't set this thing on white pants! As such, there are some obvious cosmetic dings you'd expect for a machine of this age
The Trackball - also known issue on these models - does not work.
Appears to need a PS/2 mouse attached to get past the POST track ball error
Back cover for ports (not 100% sure these ever had one) is missing
No Math Co-processor, but that was not standard on these, and there is an easy access port for adding one
The Good:
If you get past the keyboard error at POST - seems to run great. Test utilities pass all hardware (other than trackball)
Have run an external CD drive (using a SCSI to Parallel shuttle cable) off the Parallel port to great success
Have run a Xircom Parallel Port Ethernet adapter to connect to network/internet
Have run an external Parallel Port Sound Card
Has the OEM Case
Has the OEM Power Supply
The TFT LCD VGA Display looks fantastic
Has 8MB DRAM JEIDA card to boost total RAM to 10MB (2 MB on board)
80MB HD - which I believe was an upgraded option at time of release
I'm willing to piece it out - (RAM, MODEM, etc) or sell it whole. Also willing to throw in the external CD drive - (HP M820 CDWriter Plus with the requisite cables - SCSI to Parallel), the Xircom Pocket Ethernet III adapter, and the Parallel Port Sound Card.
If anyone is interested, please let me know. Prefer US customers only - but will entertain others. Paypal only. This thing is heavy, so if you are interested in the whole thing, shipping cost could be substantial. Any sale would be as-is.
$250 for Everything + Shipping from Clearwater Florida, USA
If pieced:
$70 for 8MB Jeida DRAM card + Shipping from Clearwater Florida, USA
$50 for modem card + Shipping from Clearwater Florida, USA
Let me know if interested in other 'parts' and I will come up with a price
Thanks
