FOUND: Thinkpad for wife, maybe T520 or T530, similar

Hi all,

My wife needs a new computer. She likes a bigger screen, at least 15". She uses it mainly for office type work, internet, etc. No hardcore spec requirements. Anyone selling one similar? Recommendations?

Depends on what you mean by "hardcore spec requirements". I don't need hard core spec requirements that I am happy with something as old as ThinkPad T43p and Windows 10. Office work works flawlessly on T43p for something pre-office 2013. Internet works fine too with a bit patience and adblock.

But for the majority of members here, they prefer a T6xp or T6xF with 15" UXGA IPS and SSD.

I am sure someone like RealBlackStuff has a LOT of T6x frankenpads lying around to be sold and he lives pretty close to you, while I have a T42 15" (with IDTech UXGA IPS but the LCD isn't in a very good condition) that I need to sell if I can.

If you want more performance than THAT, it is no longer called no hardcore spec requirements, but if that's the case, go for a T520 or T530 with NVidia graphics (I'd personally regret getting Intel HD only variant if I did because all other stuff like CPU, RAM, HDD, LCD and wireless can be upgraded later if you decide to use it for more than 7 years, but not GPU)

Then a second hand T530 with modest specs and Nvidia graphics will do (Or T4x/6x for under $100)

I don't think you need a dedicated GPU to do office type work and internet stuff, so I wouldn't limit yourself to machines with dedicated GPUs.

My current "LOT of T6x FrankenPads lying around" consists of some RAM, a battery, a power supply and a bunch of T6x screws...
Every one of my 74 FrankenPads was already sold before I even started building it.

Oh okay then I guess instead of dealing with T6x, I have like around 2 14.1" T43 units built out of the scrap parts taken out from building a T43pF available and 15" T42 with IDTech IAUX14S panel in not so good condition.

FYI, if perhaps of interest; a rare bird was recently announced for sale in the German ThinkPads forum; a T61-motherboard in a 15" 4:3 T60 frame (i.e. a "FrankenPad") with a new BoeHydis UXGA IPS Flexview Display with LED Backlight! - see the thread For sale: Frankenpad IBM T61, 15" Hydis UXGA LED, Intel T9300, 4 GB Ram, Multi III, 9c Akku (use Google Translate if you're not fluent in German). Expensive, yes, and outside USA, yes (so expensive shipping as well), but still an item highly appreciated by many ThinkPad'ers...
