Living space is becoming an issue in my HQ, and I simply *must* make room for stuff that I've acquired lately...so I'm offering a fabulous one-time-deal to forum members here, good only until October 2nd, 2017 when all of these systems will end up being recycled.
The bottom line is really simple: take all as described, or take none. There will be NO splitting this time around.
System # 1:
ThinkPad Z61m (9450-D6U)
T5500(1.66GHz)
1GB RAM............................................................now 3GB
120GB 5400rpm HD...............................................now 500GB/5400rpm
15.4in 1680x1050 LCD...........................................now 1280x800 (please read below)
128MB ATI Radeon X1400
CDRW/DVDRW
Intel 802.11abg wireless........................................now ThinkPad (Atheros-chipped) a/b/g/n (42T0825)
Bluetooth/Modem
1Gb Ether
UltraNav
Sec Chip
IEEE 1394
FPR
Camera
6c Li-Ion batt.................................NONE
WinXP Pro COA
No AC adapter included
This is, by far, the cleanest example of a Z series ThinkPad with a Titanium lid that I've seen in many years. While there is some very superficial wear - a few small scratches and a couple of spots that are lighter than the rest of the lid - there is ZERO pitting in the clear coat and the surface is surprisingly uniform to touch. The plastics are in near mint shape, I'd rate them at 9.5 on a 1-10 scale and would give the overall grade of 9 for the machine as a whole.
There is one "flaw" with this system, and that is the fact that the original WSXGA+ LCD has been replaced with a WXGA one at some point in the past. While there's not much wrong with the current panel (one pressure mark, likely TrackPoint-related) a higher-resolution screen would make this collectable ThinkPad really shine.
System # 2:
ThinkPad R61 (8919-22U)
T7300(2GHz)...................now T7700 (2.4 GHz)
1GB RAM.........................now 4GB (2x2GB)
80GB 5400rpm HD..............now 160GB/7200rpm
15.4in 1680x1050 LCD
128MB nVIDIA Quadro NVS 140M
CDRW/DVD
Intel 802.11abg wireless........now Atheros AR 9380 abgn
Bluetooth
Modem
1Gb Ethernet
UltraNav
Secure chip
Fingerprint reader
6c Li-Ion............................NONE
WinVista Business
Middleton's modded BIOS installed
No AC adapter included
This R61 has been my on-and-off "go to" machine for a couple of years now. However, I've recently moved to a T61p and it's been collecting dust ever since. The laptop in question has been one heck of a reliable workhorse and definitely deserves a better fate than that. Not to mention that I'd definitely get more money by parting this system out...but I want someone to enjoy it and utilize it "as-is": imperfect, yet still extremely usable and reliable.
the not-so-good:
1) The planar is not a "safe" one, sporting a 08/02 date. Having said that, it's a native Penryn board and has undergone numerous stress tests as well as thousands of hours of "normal" use. My take is that it's likely as safe as any 10-year-old motherboard, but YMMV.
2) Normal wear and tear for a ThinkPad of this vintage.
3) A piece of plastic chipped off the fan grille
4) While I wouldn't describe the LCD as dim, it could definitely be a bit brighter.
the good:
1) The cooling has been upgraded to a T61p fan/heatsink and made quite a noticeable difference in temps. This is not a hot-running-machine by any stretch of imagination.
2) The wireless card went from the worst (Intel 3945ABG) to the best (Atheros AR9380).
3) A fresh load of (vanilla) Vista Business 32 - matching the still legible COA - is present, activated and fully functional, it will require updates/tweaking as per one's own preferences, though.
4) The RAM upgrade made the system very responsive (IMO) in its current OS environment.
System # 3:
ThinkPad T42 (2378-DWU)
P M 1.5GHz
256MB RAM...........................................now 1GB (2x512MB)
40GB 5400rpm HDD.................................NONE (the cover is included)
15 XGA(1024x768) TFT LCD
32MB ATI Radeon 7500
24x24x24x/8x CD-RW/DVD
Intel 802.11b/g wireless(MPCI)
Modem(CDC)
1Gb Ethernet(LOM)
UltraNav
Secure Chip
6 cell Li-Ion battery
WinXP Pro COA
72W genuine IBM AC adapter included
known imperfections:
- Wear/tear on the lid about average for a ThinkPad of this era.
- No hard drive will be included. I simply have none to spare.
Overall, this is a very clean machine given its vintage, and works fine both in Linux and XP - the latter was tested using one of my own drives - with no signs of usual planar-related ailments. The LCD shows no flaws that I'm able to see, and is still very bright. The plastics are in very good condition to say the very least, much better than what one would expect to find on a 1st-generation-T42.
If the buyer so desires, I'll include a Dothan-core PM 725 (1.6 GHz/2MB L2 cache) with this unit. In theory, swapping the current CPU with it should provide a pinch better battery life and a hair cooler/faster system overall, but given the age of the machine, it's unlikely to make much of a difference in real life, apart from possibly the temperature aspect. Nevertheless, it's there and free if anyone wants it WITH this T42 only.
PM or email me directly to tataslonATaol.com with any questions/concerns.

All of these were available separately, no one bit. At this price...no splitting, and they're already as good as gone

If they will either be recycled or given away, why not just give it away at the price of shipping for the buyer if no one bites?ajkula66 wrote:All of these were available separately, no one bit. At this price...no splitting, and they're already as good as gone

Because that's not what I've chosen to do this time around.Thinkpad4by3 wrote: ↑Thu Sep 28, 2017 12:23 pmIf they will either be recycled or given away, why not just give it away at the price of shipping for the buyer if no one bites?
I also never question the motives behind other people's sales decisions. But that's me.
Nevertheless, these are now officially sold.
