WTB: ThinkPad 860

#1 Post by kev009 » Mon Jan 01, 2018 11:01 pm

Looking for a TP 860. I am a unix kernel developer, would be fun to have and keep netbsd alive on.

Khipata has already sold almost all his collection, no 800s left.

So I am still looking for an 860!

If you are flexible to one generation older, I have a 760EL sitting around. Though, I'd have to finish that OS install I've been meaning to do for a while.

(It has an empty hard drive, and while it posts well with power adapter, it is otherwise an empty shell for the moment.)
Thanks, but it's not a generation thing. The 800s are an entirely different species that use PowerPC CPUs, with OpenFirmware, and primarily run AIX.

My bad, I'm sort of new to this and I have a "modern" mindset to the way that computers are named.

Good luck on your search. I couldn't really find any in the Japan region used market sites at the moment.

Sorry for intruding.

In Japan actually you may have a couple of chances but not resorting to online sites. I remember that there were some niche places in akiba, one specialized on sgi but with also extra goods..

Interesting. idk this places in Akihaba, but OP is (almost certainly) not in Japan.

Still, if you can find/remeber the name of the place, I'd love to give them a visit.

Well, one I remember was on the underground of the Tokyo Radio Department Store , if I remember right anyway... 11 years, but the gmaps image seems the same I remember.
From Sega Akiba, on one side of the building there's the train line and a street running parallel to the train line. That building is 30 meters from the corner, or maybe 50...

The place dealing with sgi and co was in one of the side streets, first or 2nd floor. Halfway the stairs used to have empty chassis of indigo2 as visual ads

mmm lot of changes.

An interesting place was on the backside of the train station, in a road full of audio small shops. There was , maybe is, a big dealer of laptops hidden at the 2nd floor reachable only with an elevator... quite not in a place you would expect ( I was carried by an old guy that knew a lot of places )

I'm quite happy to buy one from Japan if someone wants to earn some money middle manning a transaction.

I hope you have deep pockets when you say that, because middle manning any transaction by mail from Asia into the US is expensive. Worse, I did look in Akihabara. Found a really nice R60e that I did some upgrades on (and will probably soon trade away for a 760-- if anyone has one), but the nearest 860 I've located was in China.

https://item.taobao.com/item.htm?id=13011577041 <-- This one actually.

And the guy isn't negotiating, and lists the item itself at ~17500 yen (for scale, that's 1/10th of what I pay approximately for my NH8/NH7 flight from Tokyo/Narita to San Francisco round-trip, or around 200 dollars). From there, add some shipping from China to Japan (or maybe China to US) and you get around another 300 dollars at least to ship it safely in an EMS package (maybe 100 if you agree to risk sea-shipping).

That's all before I take any profit for my own human capital of time to be a middleman. I'd probably want 50 US Dollars or 20% of the item's value, whichever is larger for this part.

As I wouldn't want to risk any of my own capital for another's benefit, you'd have to pay most if not all upfront, but if you're still keen, PM me and I'll work out some of the details for an estimate.

P.S. If you or anyone else knows to the nearest 10 grams what a Thinkpad 860 weighs, this would really help me calculate the shipping estimate.

Wait, it's really 4-figures in the US? Whooooo... yikes.

Yeah, if I get that one from China into your place alright, it'll be within three figures I think (if you insist on Air or EMS shipping I may not be estimating enough, but let's hope I am). For the fun of it, let's see if I can get it to you for less than 860USD (as it is a Thinkpad 860 :P).

I have asked my shipping partners to provide proof from the seller at the same grade we ask for proof on /r/thinkpadsforsale - with the store name of the Seller and the current date on a sticky note or other paper, photographed together with the product.

Well in that case, I'll await your PM.

I have an 860 RS6000 if you're still interested. It boots to the CDE login screen or X windows and that's where I'm stuck at because I don't know the password, nor do I have AIX 4.1.5 or 4.2.1 media. I'm trying to get media but it's been elusive so far. The battery is dead (won't hold a charge), it does have the internal CD drive, external floppy drive, 3 button mouse and original case.

Cool, it'd be good for it to go to someone who'll put it to use. I've had it for years with little to no use. Was good to see that it still boots up and shuts down as expected. Annoyed that I don't remember the password and misplaced the media

You don't happen to have the "PowerPC Microprocessor Common Hardware Reference Platform: A System Architecture" would you? (Misplaced or otherwise?)

Ah, thanks for answering.

I had the name slightly wrong so I edited it.

I hope to someday find that book, it is quite elusive.

Meanwhile, I still have my IBM PC Jr. Books + Sampler Floppy Disk I got on accident (mistaked for the same kind of computer, loong story) and am hoping to someday trade for the reference book...

Do you think I'll ever have any luck?

You can reset the passwords by booting the CD install media, selecting a maintenance shell, mounting the drive, and editing the files in /etc/security directly. Any 4.1.4 or 4.1.5 disc will work; there's no special release that's needed for the laptops.

Thanks, problem is so far I can't find the 4.1.5 media to boot from and the 4.3.3 that I have doesn't seem to work. I came across this forum while trying to find somewhere online that I could download either 4.1.4 or 4.1.5. I also saw that 4.2.1 would supposedly work but I can't find that either.

Howdy,

I don't need the media, and your description of the boot is good enough condition for me. PM me to arrange a transaction.

It's now on its way to a new home!
In starting this search a few months ago (and to be honest, I never found anything past a couple of already bought PowerPC listings [and a nice T9300 X61]), I became quite interesting in knowing more about this amazing series. (A few members know how I called both IBM US and Japan to ask about their AIX offerings.)

Especially if it boots into AIX, I would like to see many pictures and videos!

Thanks for the wonderful adventure.
