Watch for my stolen ThinkPad T25
Watch for my stolen ThinkPad T25
Not sure where to post this, but my apartment was broken in to and a number of things were taken, including my ThinkPad T25, from the bay area in California, USA. If you see any for sale used, and without the box and all that, and would like to check if it might be mine, I can provide the serial number from my purchase to see if it is the same one.
Re: Watch for my stolen ThinkPad T25
I'd hang the villain by the balls under my ceiling for such thing, really.
Hoping you get it back some way, and will let you know if anything pops out in there.

Very sorry to hear about the incident.
Check the pawn shops in your area, that would be my first thought.
Wishing you the best of luck with recovering everything.

I kind of... don't know what to say. I really feel for you, Bibin.
Pawn shops, eBay, local Craiglists - I would check all of these periodically. Not just for the laptop, but some of the other things as well. Anything that pops up can lead to the thief.
Did you file a police report? Is there insurance?

Thinkpad4by3's Law of the Universe.
The efficiency of two screens equally sized with equal numbers if pixels are equal. The time spent by a 4:3 user complaining about 16:9 is proportional to the inefficiency working with a 16:9 display, therefore the amount of useful work extracted is equal.

This sounds like sound advice. Yet, violence is not the answer.

Re: Watch for my stolen ThinkPad T25
Sorry for not responding. Thank you for your sympathetic replies.
I called the police and filed a report immediately after noticing that the apartment had been compromised, and have filed a claim with my renter's insurance company. Hopefully, since I have the box, serial, and receipt from the TP256 purchase (among a few other things that were stolen) I can hopefully be covered by insurance.
I'm never getting my data back, but aside from some very small unpushed git changes and a medium-sized pile of reverse engineering notes, no precious files were lost. The laptop was not and will never be my main computer, so the data problems are limited to the change of them extracting passwords from the web browsing history. However, I am diligent on that front, and have changed my passwords and enabled two-factor auth for a number of important accounts. If the laptop was to contain more important or secure data, I would have considered encryption, but given its use case it was not used.

Re: Watch for my stolen ThinkPad T25
I haven't had a laptop stolen from me yet, but even before your story, I've met enough people who had it happen to them, so I decided to set up the BIOS Hard Drive (ATA) password on all of them. Assuming the laptop is off (or hibernated) when it's jacked, only the most skilled and determined thief will be able to get through to the data, and people who opportunistically rob apartments are typically not in that category, so at least I don't worry about private data leaking.Bibin wrote: ↑Mon Jan 08, 2018 1:21 pmI'm never getting my data back, but aside from some very small unpushed git changes and a medium-sized pile of reverse engineering notes, no precious files were lost. When leaving for a day or more, I usually try to keep my laptops locked in the docking stations. The dock itself is not chained to anything, so it's possible of course to pick it up with the machine, but that will deter some thieves, at least.
I don't bother to do anything to the desktops, because no one will take a desktop; at least not the type of thieves who operate in this area. Honestly, most of them would probably not touch my Thinkpads either, since they look like old crap (the TP25 would be an exception, though).
Edit: and good luck with the insurance claim!

Agreed with this sentiment. I'll keep an eye out in the UK in case it gets this far awaymadicetea wrote: ↑Sun Jan 07, 2018 4:26 amWhile you (like I) don't have insurance for most of your computers (unless it's a part of your Home Insurance - maybe check into that) there is a need to file a police report.
There's been no response yet far from you about this, but you should file one when you get the chance to. Good luck.
Btw madicetea how did you get a T9500 in your X61s? I sent you a pm
