I just helped someone on the German Thinkpad forum getting the European IBM wallpapers (and the EMEA screensaver) off of my A31p.

If you also want them, you can get them here in full quality:
http://cloud.lichtmetzger.de/d/ab6dd76d020146b28d5c/

He kindly nudged me over here, because I also have an A22p and would be interested in the recovery CD's. I know I'm pretty new here, but I could trade in my XP SP3 European recovery CD's for the A31p as .iso's, if you're interested. :)

Thanks for the uploads and access. All isos downloaded . Again thanks and continue for other users who keep EOL devices actively productive.

Hi
I'm coming from another thread about activating XP Pro on X60. My problem is that I have the OEM product key on the back of the machine but no recovery disc. I have reinstalled XP Pro from another disc with it's own Key ( I presume this is a retail Disc). Right now I have XP up and working and internet wifi connected. Now, today, I have 26 days to activate it. I have tried a phone call and got a run around from Microsoft. I think if I were to use an OEM version with the OEM key that I have I may bypass the activation. What do you think and can you help.

When using an appropriate OEM Windows installer, the SLIC code found in BIOS, when matched against the certificate and product key paired with the OEM installer, will activate the OS install automatically. The COA/key on the underside of the machine is a proof of license and the key listed is not the key used in the OEM installer.

If you would like to erase and go back to a factory install, I have XP Pro for the T60 and X61, either should be a close enough match to work on the X60.

Oh yes please I would love to have the key/product and any advice on installing it.
Some times it seems you know where your going and suddenly it all changes. It's like wading a stream where you can see the other side but further in you go the deeper you get and half way across you just don't know what's going to happen.

Shoot me a PM with your preference to which recovery media you want to try.

These are all CD images, so you will need a USB ODD or UltraBase to do the restore as well as a few CD-Rs or CD-RW disks.

You do not meet the qualifications set forth in post 1 for receipt of recovery media. I have not received your message. Please try again in a few months or after you have been more active on the forum. Thanks!

Reporting back - I was able to use the 770X recovery CD to install Win98 (first edition) but the German language aspect seems impossible to totally remove. AV, certain context menus and windows defaults persist in German even after an upgrade through Win98 SE to Windows ME! Having said that, it's the closest I've come to a functional 770X and I am deeply grateful! I was able to connect the laptop to a Selectadock II, but using an external monitor with video card is still eluding me. I might try the 770Z media in the near future and keep it at 98.

hi,

my t440p does not have COA sticker. I only see one sticker: Intel Inside Core i5.

my TP has Japanese keyboard. So i assume it came from Japan.

does this mean Recovery Disk won't work?

The Windows 7 EN-US set should work on it. All the T440s came with at least Windows 7 so it should activate normally. The COA label is hidden under the battery.

Activation is usually only a problem when you try to install a newer OS than what was shipped on the machine - e.g. using Windows 8 recovery media on a system with a Windows 7 CoA.

I don't see CoA under the battery. I bought this T440P (second hand) in China. It has a Japanese keyboard. When I received it, it was loaded with Chinese-only version of Win-7. I wiped the HDD and installed Linux.
Now I want to install Win-7 (English version). There is no CoA...not under battery...not under the back cover.

Does this mean Recovery Disk won't work?

Thanks!

I'm thinking it will, the only times I've not seen recovery activate properly is when trying to use Windows 7 restores on some early T400s which shipped with Vista or XP (before Windows 7 came out). But even then, there are BIOS updates/mods to make it work.

By any chance did you ever get an original Lenovo Win7/driver disc for the popular W500? With all the EOL changes at Lenovo and MS breaking the Windows Update system for Win 7, it's a nightmare to do a fresh install. Ideally I am looking for the original Windows 7 x64 edition of Pro or Ultimate.

I am assuming CoA means "code of authenticity"or similar? I will have to see if the Microsoft product sticker on the underside of my W500 is even readable any more.

No, I've never had anyone share the W500 set. I do, however, have the set for W700ds (XP Pro) and several OS flavors for T400/500, which would work on W500.

CoA is the certificate of authenticity issued with Windows 7 and earlier systems. It's a "proof of license" from MS that verifies the system is properly licensed to run the OS in question. I'm not the MS police by any means, but I do need to make it clear that, for this "program", that anyone who asks for a given recovery set acknowledges that they have a properly licensed machine and are in compliance with the MS EULA to run the software in question on their system.

Should we figure out a way to host these somewhere? Or create torrents? Hmm, i bet there are some data hoarders that wouldnt mind hosting this content.

I've spent a considerable sum of time and money assembling these. I have no interest in uploading them for general public consumption at this time.

My conditions on providing these is, I feel, extremely reasonable for a free-of-charge service. I've started to see that people I've provided certain images to have started distributing them to publicly accessible archives. If I continue to see this happen, I will discontinue this service.

I am super grateful for the work and ongoing efforts you make to assist Thinkpad enthusiasts all over the world in getting their Thinkpads back up and running. I strongly agree that your conditions are extremely reasonable - especially for a free-of-charge service! And I do hope that other folks in this community recognize that and refrain from redistributing links to images that you've worked hard to gather and maintain. It would be a huge loss for everyone were we forced to return to the days of having to pay for all these images on random auction sites or through questionable suppliers.

Sincerely,
Philip Kiff

Thanks for the encouragement, Phil. It's appreciated. Maybe I've grown callous and weary over the last couple years, having responded to many hundreds of requests?

I had been emailing Bill back and forth for a while, and he was ready to send me a box full of his old recovery CDs so I could add them to this archive. He hasn't responded to me in a few months. Does anyone know if he's OK?
