WTB: Thinkpad R60 or T60

#1 Post by Twiggy » Tue Apr 21, 2020 1:06 am

As the title says I am wanting to buy either a Thinkpad T60 or R60.

I only have a few requirements because my main use will be for early-mid 2000's gaming, so I need the 4:3 1024x768 screen, as well as 128mb of video ram, so I know that for the R60 that'd be the ATI Radeon X1400 variant, I don't know exactly for the T60 but I know there are variants that come with 128mb of video ram as well, if there's one with 256mb, that's even better of course.

I am willing to work with people, and pay a fair price.

If anyone can help, feel free to reply here, or send a PM, whatever you prefer.

I would suggest to ditch the 1024x768 requirement and get a 15" T60 with 1400x1050 or T60p with 1600x1200, as those screens are IPS and are much nice than the other screens on these series, even if you play just on 1024x768.

T60/R60 can be had with 64MB X1300 or 128MB X1400. T60p has the 256MB V5200/V5250 (which is akin to an X1600).

Thanks for that information.

It seems a T60p then would be the best and much preferred, though I am still after something with the 4:3 1024x768 screen.

If I were to go wide screen, and at higher resolutions, then there would be no point for me to be buying another laptop, as I already have one from 2009, which is more than capable of early-mid 2000s gaming, only issue is that the aspect ratio and native resolution is all wrong, and up-scaling a lower resolution to a higher resolution just looks wrong to me and many others as well, I call it "fuzzy". 1024x768 is a safe native resolution because any game from 2000 on (if not earlier) should support it for sure.

As for the quality of the screens, I just got my T42 in today, and I don't have a problem with it's screen, it seems just fine to me, and seems very bright as well, which is weird because in some reviews I've seen, people said the screens are not nearly as bright as modern ones, which may be the case, but not something I notice or care about.

So while 256mb video ram would be best, I'd be okay with 128mb if that's the best I can find, but lack of 4:3 1024x768 screen is a deal breaker for my needs.

Why? Didn't you just get one such T42?

I didn't suggest a widescreen T60/p. Just a higher resolution for a better screen.

Looks fuzzy in games? In games the difference should be barely noticeable. Working with text and UI elements - sure, but there is no reason to use anything other than native for that.

IMO, you are focusing on the wrong thing, but to each his own.

I like my T42, however it's just a standard Type 2373 with the Radeon 7500 32mb, so it's not really capable of games from about 2001 on, as even Grand Theft Auto III barely plays in 640x480, as soon as it's bumped up to 800x600, it is not playable at all, however 32mb vram is the minimum requirement for it. Return to Castle Wolfenstein on the other hand, works very smoothly, but it only requires 16mb. Old School Runescape plays too, but it can run on a potato.

So while the T42 does play the one game I originally bought it for, I doubt it can handle something like Far Cry, GTA San Andreas, or Star Wars Battlefront 2, for example.

I am after a T60 or R60 because I hear they can come with core duo, or core 2 duo processors, usually 2.0ghz and above, and can have the native screen resolution and aspect ratio I want, and have faster DDR2 ram and can go up to 3GB, they should suit my needs for playing those games.

It seems that the variant of X1400 128MB with XGA (1024x768) is very rare on these machines. I can find no preconfigured T60 with this combination, and only a handful of R60. Plenty have the XGA screen and the X1300 64MB.

Thank you,

Seems I will have to target the R60 in that case.
